All those suggesting shooting an orca may not have actually seen one up close in the wild. Think of an intelligent, fast, 25', 6,000# muscle expressing interest in you. I've had them come with a few feet of my boat more than a few times. Scary strong and agile. Pretty sure a shotgun wouldn't have much effect other than really pissing them off.

Glad my visitors have had no other intention than just going about their day. But then Canadians are intrinsically polite, I guess.

I read that back in the 1960s when aquariums caught orcas on the West Coast, most of the ones they caught showed damage from being shot. It was apparently common to shoot at them back in the day. They're sentient, it's amazing they don't hold a grudge against us ... maybe that group of youths near Portugal is taking retribution?

An Orca sinking an offshore-type sailboat? Doubtful. A wine-sipping crew driven to panic by a bump? Likely. Planning for an Orca defense is not on my to-do list. Getting into the life raft or jumping into the sea for a sling rescue would seem imprudent.

This pod (or pods) have been taking out rudders and/or keels for at least 10 years, a relatively "new" development & specific to the area only - not other orca populations worldwide. So a sinking wouldn't be out of the question/

One could look into seal bombs as used /legal by some AK/usa fisheries if this was a real concern.

Have a read... Nothing new here.

I've had a close Orca encounter or two when diving. Seals suddenly started shouldering their way past me and looking back to give me weird looks. At the time, I though they were saying "Hey, look out buddy!" But now I realize they were saying, "Thank God, that fucker is slower than me!"
