Under water micro phones with Yoko or your favorite heavy metal band? Or just random "whale sounds" recordings that seem to be available.

Just a small point, Orcas are not part of the Whale family, they belong to the Dolphin family. I believe the Killer Whale name arises from the fact that they have been known to kill whales.
They are called whales because they are big. Killer because they kill (they are predators of larger vertebrates with whom we empathize).

I guess it is a "fun fact" that they are more closely related to dolphins than whales. My sense is that everybody knows this already. I could be wrong.

I think that outside of a marine bio class, it is pretty lame to "correct" people on that point. Many of those you correct will already know it and there is nothing wrong with calling them by their common name: killer whale.
Just checking that I have read your post correctly. You are not challenging the accuracy of my post but you say "My sense is that everybody knows this already. I could be wrong."

Well… I don’t think it’s a trend
Part orca , 10 parts media
We'd been talking about it constantly for more than a year before the media knew a thing. I was doing deliveries for 3 years between the UK/France/Spain/Portugal/Northern Africa/Gib and skippered a marine mammal observation boat that operated in the mouth of the med for 8 months. I never heard a single account of an orca attacking or disabling a boat during my time there.

According to the cruising and delivery skippers, it's not just a trend - it's a real risk. Beforehand, it was more like a lightning strike.

Yes. I am a little sensitive about it. Recently I watched a video on youtube about orcas killing a grey whale calf. There must have been 20 comments saying "actually they are not whales.... they are members of the dolphin family..." And I got really irritated. Maybe I took it out on you a bit. But I bet the intersection of people here at SA who A don't know and B do care that Orcas are members of the dolphin family is pretty small. It is kind of like when people say "actually, the tomato is a fruit, not a vegetable..."

There is also the fact that dolphins (including killer whales) are members of the order (well, parvorder) "Odontoceti" known commonly as toothed whales. I probably knew that at one point but I forgot until just now when I looked it up.

So killer whales are members of the dolphin class ("Delphinidae") but that class is under the order of toothed whales. So All dolphins are actually toothed whales.

Hopefully this will permanently cure you of correcting people when they refer to Orcas by their common name of "Killer Whale." I still think it is a fun fact that Orcas are giant dolphins. So good on you if you share this fun fact with people who don't know.

You can check this all out on wikipedia if you don't believe me. Or read this if you find it to be a reliable source: https://www.ifaw.org/ca-en/journal/are-dolphins-whales

For 10+ million years the Orca were the apex predators of the oceans. They ate everything that swam in the seas and still do. Except for us, who started boating 30 or 50,000 years ago. I wonder how long it took them to develop an absolute taboo against eating us?

When they found out we weren't all that tasty and had less nutritional value than cetaceans and pinnipeds.
