SAILORS FACE WILD CONDITIONS FOR DAY ONE
Sun, strong breeze and big waves bring speed, smiles, and breakage
CHARLESTON, SC (April 17, 2009) - Competitors are nursing sunburns and sore muscles this evening after spectacular weather made the start of 2009 Charleston Race Week something to remember.
Race Committee members on the offshore courses faced some of the hardest conditions of the day as they pitched around setting marks and start/finish lines. "The seas started off only three feet or so, but by the end of the day they were consistently at 6 feet plus, with four second periods," said mark set official Jay Stuart.
There was plenty of wind, but it was pretty consistent and great sailing breeze," said Jeff Worobel, sailing on the B-25 'Red Hot Chili Peppers. "In fact, there wasn't any drama at all until we broke our rudder!" Worobel expects to be ready to race again in the morning.
Worobel's rudder wasn't the only breakage - the Beneteau 36.7 Blueprint crashed into a competing boat and destroyed its bow pulpit, but they didn't let it deter them. "We made a call to the local Beneteau dealer, and have a look yourself - the new part is already on and we're ready to go again!"
Inshore Courses Deliver Thrills and Spills
The 22-knot winds on the ocean courses didn't make it into the harbor until the third race of the day, but it was worth the wait. "It's always so great in this harbor when the breeze gets up," said Viper 640 Class President Justin Scott. The British born Massachusetts sailor said he "couldn't wipe the smile off my face."
Today was also the first ever one-design start for the Melges 20, the newest sportboat from the famous Wisconsin-based builder. "The boat is just so easy to handle, never out of control and an absolute hoot to sail," said points leader Marc Hollerbach, who sails with sons Adam and Ian, and soon-to-be superstar female sailor, 16 year old Morgan Kiss. "The Race Committee and volunteers were flawless and we had the best racing I've done in ages - bring on tomorrow!"
Lighter Winds To Grant Sailors Reprieve
Tomorrow's forecasts calls for significantly less wind than today, bringing Charleston's famous currents more into focus for the sailors. Their aching bodies should be replenished by then - thanks to a huge spread of dinner at tonight's Lowcountry feast at the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina. People interested in seeing all the action tomorrow on the spacious 'Palmetto Breeze' catamaran should reserve their space by calling (800) 524-3444 or (843) 886-8133.

Cannot believe how many happy people I met tonight, and once again, everyone seems to have grabbed a drink for me. Unfortunately, I have a hard time refusing Gosling's.
Funny story: Every year, Gosling's marketing super chick Rinnear Thatcher comes up to Charleston to support the event. If you've been around the Caribbean at all you know Rinnear, a smart, sassy and sexy thing always keeping you on your toes.
Today, I caught sight of her trading Gosling's hats for red Mount Gay hats...and then laying the MG hats ceremoniously on the bonfire...

While we were indeed disappointed that we were not fully live and that our quality was not what we hoped for, we DID learn yet another pile of new shit to deal with, and we (fingers crossed) should have things sorted for today's webcast. The problem, as always, is bandwidth - but we are going to solve it very soon, and we are working on a few things with an Anarchist in St. Pete to make sure that we can have the kind of bandwidth we need at any event in the world.

So....We missed a few roundings here and there, but we uploaded more than 30 clips yesterday to the Sail.TV/SailingAnarchy Viewer - about 20 were of Melges 24 Roundings, while a mix of dismasted J/24 and interesting sailor interviews make up the rest. They may not be what you all want to see, but they are there for whomever wants them, and that's good enough for me.
The viewer looks really good everywhere I'm looking at it. Newbie SailTV said, "

That may solve your problems - the other thing to do is to press "Pause" on the player after it starts playing - give it 10 or 20 seconds, then start again - it should play much more smoothly.

Alright Race Fans! hahahahaha
As you might expect from our silence, we are busy looking for bikini-clad sailors as the boats drift around in the warm sun and zero breeze. Current is starting to move too, so it might get interesting. Currently we are scoping the talent out on various courses, and our video system seems to be working nicely. UNfortunately, the Sail.TV interface is not working right at the moment, and of course it is a Saturday and I don't think Brits work on Saturday. I sent out emails and phone calls so we'll see, but in the meantime, the old standby YouTube will have to do. It's all good.
Sarah Proctor is aboard, thank god. Can't wait to post these bikini shots, they are HOT.
