Juan Pablo Montoya was alone on the race track trying to catch the rest of the field under caution when something appeared to break on his No. 42 Chevrolet, sending him skidding into the back of a maintenance truck equipped with a jet-powered dryer.

The crash ruptured a tank filled with jet fuel, which burned wildly for several minutes before safety workers could put down the flames.

Montoya was not seriously injured, nor was the driver of the jet dryer, who was not identified.

The fire may have damaged the asphalt and SAFER barrier enough to force an end of the race. There was no immediate word from NASCAR on the condition of the track or the barrier.

Dave Blaney was leading the race at the time of the red-flag incident, which occurred with 160 laps complete.

Montoya said something in the transmission or rear end broke on his car, sending him into a skid. His car's driver's side struck the jet dryer in the rear.

"It just started vibrating through all of the gears," Montoya said over his radio. "Look at the back of the car."

Watching the replay something broke in the rear of the car, and it just shot up into the jet dryer.

So much for that new pavement laid down for last year. Its gotta be soft after that heat was on it for quite a few minutes.

Dave Blaney, the guy who stayed out and is sitting in first under the red flag, may end-up being the luckiest guy around.

His team has already made a killing since they sold that car's starting spot to Danica.

Funny shots right now:

All the young guys are strolling down the track to check-out the carnage, Danica is over talking to the old guys, Labonte, Nemechek, etc.

And Blaney had to race his way into the 500 since DP got his points.

^

That was quick to show-up.

Drivers loaded and getting back to racing pretty soon. With 40 to go things will get interesting.

Funny to see Danica have to go potty...........................

Re-start with worries about what would happen the first time going over the patch, with quite a few cars laying back to watch and see.

All OK so far.
