Ya, it's sad. The boat is legendary in my mind; so was Carl. Flipping the pages of the sailing mags in the heydays of IOR machines like Cadenza,Camouflage etc made my pants tight! I so wanted to be there.

I don't know if you can take it but here's some shots and a youtube from a local sailing site. The were collected by the UKNW loft owner and he has a SC 70.

Sail on Cadenza - sad end of an era.

Great boat, even better crew. Nicknamed THE DESK years ago she was often in the hunt for the pickle dish. Sad to see her go to waste but fiber reinforced plastic can only last so long. Calm seas and fair winds to her.

Aluminium, Mark.....
Glad to see someone spell it correctly.

Sorry to see Cadenza go this way though.

Haven't been there in about a year, but I'd guess the mural of Cadenza on the side of Carl's old facility on Shelter Island is still there.

I sailed a lot of miles on that boat, and previous versions. Learned a ton from Carl. Sad to see this happen, but when I was last on her in '09, she was looking pretty rough. This is a more dignified ending than sitting on a mooring and totally rotting away.
Peter -

Happy belated Thanksgiving -

Did a few Big Boat series on her as well - it was great fun back in the day racing against the Frers 45 Camouflage and the others.

I remember the deck flexing under the loads at the turning blocks and the big wake she made.

Cheers,

opusone
I was a last minute walk on with Cadenza for the '88 BBS. Carl was in Korea with the US Olympic team, and Jean was running the show. We had plenty of new boat teething problems (deck flex, winch movement, headfoil failure), but racing against boats like Camouflage was amazing!

It's a sad end, but I agree: far better than rotting into oblivion.

Depending upon electrolysis, old aluminium hulls may be in less seaworthy shape than old GRP hulls. Delivering the IOR Class A, mini-maxi Boomerang north after the SORC in the early 80's we had a significant crack appear where the prop shaft strut was welded to the hull. Electricity will eat aluminium boats alive, if not tended to diligently with proper sacrificial zincs, and careful monitoring and care of electrical onboard and dockside systems.

Sailing and living with Brits, Scots, Kiwis, Aussies and Irish in my misspent youth; and later on, ten years or more of a hobby playing with, and buying and selling classic Austin, Morris and Rover minis has made me a bit of an Anglophile.

Boot, bonnet, windscreen, perspex and all that rot! LOL!

Just don't call a cigarette a "fag", or tell an English bird that she has a cute "fanny"!!!

Oh Man, never sailed w/ Carl but sailed against him a lot, a great guy. His contributions to the US Olympic Sailing team are legend too. I honor him by going with the suspenders and belt combo now. Sad to see Cadenza on the scrap pile.

The last cool IOR boat to get flipped around here was the X one tonner Dauntless, which is now somewhere up a river with a kink in the topmast and a whole lot of scary quasi-liveaboard features. Trust me, this is the best thing that could happen to Cadenza once she sat in the NW for a couple years. I was thinking about buying and parting her out even before she got loose and stove in the bow against a barge.

IOR boat with a topmast? Must be gaff rigged, then! LOL!
