DN Iceboat World Championship

Hard water sailors from all over the globe will descend up on Torch Lake on Saturday for the pinnacle of iceboat racing.

Torch Lake up in Northwest Michigan will be the registration point for this event. Sailors will register on Saturday, February 7th and then provided there is good clean ice, they'll start racing. As it is with iceboat racing, the regatta location is determined by the quality of the ice. So if it gets snowed out - or by some crazy weather act; melts, the 100 + sailors will pack up their gear and go else where - They have 7 days to complete the regatta.

Matt Struble, who has been dominating the DN class for a few years now, was up at Torch last weekend tuning up and sparing with the likes of Meade and Jan Gougeon and Dr. John Harper.

Struble is the favorite to win here, but as we all know, upsets are part of the game.

I'll be getting daily reports and posting them here -

Supposed to warm up Saturday into the low 40s (gasp) with rain. Cools again on Sunday, but not exactly ideal hard water sailing weather.

2009 on the ice anarchy? fire it up! shit if you want i'll go up there and send in the footage. give Clean a run for his money haha. DN action is fast and everyone will enjoy coverage of this event. and unlike KW the race committee would embrace the coverage of DN worlds on a platform like this.

It's almost 40 deg F at Torch Lake and there is wet ice and a bunch of wind - almost 25 knots

The sailors will have the customary Flag ceremony and then do a qualifying run to determine who is is the Bronze, Silver and Gold fleets -

Maybe Cory will hop on with some pics and video

So.... is this a two-day regatta?

I'm booked today, but would love to see the action tomorrow, assuming they'll still be racing.

I'll get some photos and post them when I can.

Saturday and Sunday?

after Clean's more than generous offerings of booze and money unfortunately i can not take that much time off FUCK! as a consolation i've spoke with Kent B. from TIYC who normaly does a pretty good recap Blog each day on the TIYC Website including pics and hopefully some vids. he is a hardcore iceboater so from him expect the racers perspective. i will monitor the site and report back. also we have a lead on a hot college chick who is heading to worlds and have sent out the message to see if she can get any vids/pics.

I live 20 minutes from Torch Lake, and now knowing that it lasts all week, we'll be there to get some good video and some photos.

I'll take an afternoon off, and go check out the action... should be a sweet time... I had no idea that they were even having an event this week.

Stay tuned.

Looking forward to some photos and video.

I know Hoop is up there, what about Ron and Mike Rehe, the rest of the Bayview ice boaters?

Good luck boys!

If Torch ends up the being the site, just head up there and ask around and someone will let you take one for a spin.
