The term “fish” has been around in prison vernacular since the late 1800's to describe a new inmate. It is said the term was derived from the idea that a new prisoner was out of his element and therefore a “fish out of water”.

After taking a spin in a well-kept 2nd gen RX-7 and a beautiful 944 turbo last week, I was reminded that the corollary to "Never meet your heroes" is "Your favorite old cars don't drive the way you thought they did." Even if they are worth 10 times now what they were then.
The 944 is pretty much a free ride currently, they’ll be worth at least what you pay now when you decide to sell. An acquaintance has a very nice red Turbo S that the timing belt let loose on so it needs serious head work if not an entire new head w/valve train. He bought it from a woman (Miss Christina?) for a song and has been “going to get to it” for the past 20 years but it sits in his shop; he’s going to break before long and let me have it for twice what he paid which is still a stellar deal. I can easily do the work it needs and freshen the rest of the mechanicals since it’s been sitting for so long, enjoy it for some years then move on. They’re a very enjoyable car to drive when everything is as it should be; I’ve also been on the prowl for an unbeaten NSX for quite a while but it’s starting to look like I may have missed that train.

Even if you paid 2x, you are still getting a deal with him paying for 20 yrs of storage. Indoor storage is never "free", and 20 years is a long time.

I 100% agree that many systems like fuel and brakes will need attention, but this is far offset by what could have been 20 years of driving wear.

I'm of the camp of never acquire assets until you need/want them. Owning stuff costs.

I hope you get the car! Enjoy it!

I've missed a lot of those trains! dealing with deferred maintenance is so fucking expensive on late late 80s-early 90s cars mostly because of parts and the fact that so many of the electronics were engineered with a 'that should work' mentality that doesn't like time and corrosion. Hence the insane prices of anything in decent shape. i did drive a first gen RX-7 with the 12a engine a few weeks back. It wasn't restored, but the underbody was tight and the fucking thing handled as well as I remembered. Slow as dirt, for sure.

Ah ha!

So now that you look at the modest sum of your savings post boating, or at least with the "post" part nearing, what would you save?

You can get that concrete floor unheated barn.

What to save?

A Tesla? Naaa...
Cummins 12v pickup?
Echo Weed trimmers?
Bridgeport Lathes?
International Scout parts?
Boats?
Twinkies?
Used zinc anodes?

Drier lint collection?
Def the drier lint and rubber bands!!!
but .... what would I have saved? ...
assorted dirt bikes and crotch rockets.. Kawi Mark III, Yamaha 750 Seca ...
2002tii, '67 MGBGT, 76 Jeep J10 pickup, '72 Dodge Charger, 84 Full size Bronco, '85 300SD
currently only saving a 97 XK8 that already had all the engine upgrades done on it when I bought it, and is still a treat to drive. It aint super fast, but it's fast enough for me at this stage of my life

Edit: and a 2001 Excursion with a 7.3L Diesel

Yepper. By 30, I'd owned over 50 cars. A couple of nice Brit roadsters but most were stock American beaters of the type we see auctioned off for huge money these days. They seem way cooler now than then.

Yeah but if we'd all kept all of them... or even half... they wouldn't be worth much.

My uncle has a ‘04 with the 6.0, ordered it with every option in ‘03. It’s still like new inside and out, he’s always been a freak about maintenance and washing/waxing on all of his vehicles and loves his Excursion. The deal when he got it was that I had first dibs when he was ready to sell; I’d still love to have it but the reality of older interior tech and that my Expedition EL is plenty big enough makes me think I’ll pass. It’s one helluva sweet vehicle though.

There was a time when this place welcomed antagonistically, disagreeable people.

I always chose/choose not to (mostly) engage with really disagreeable people. But I do miss the days Of LR's blistering dissertation's, and thicker skinned posters.

This place is a shadow of what it once was.

You were a moron when you first joined, which, incidentally, was probably 5 or 10 years after the first time I read "this place is a shadow of what it once was." You have not learned much.
