My uncle has a ‘04 with the 6.0, ordered it with every option in ‘03. It’s still like new inside and out, he’s always been a freak about maintenance and washing/waxing on all of his vehicles and loves his Excursion. The deal when he got it was that I had first dibs when he was ready to sell; I’d still love to have it but the reality of older interior tech and that my Expedition EL is plenty big enough makes me think I’ll pass. It’s one helluva sweet vehicle though.
I bought a used EL last fall to use for my ski trip out west over the winter. I think it's pretty much the same size as the Exc. if the engine ever shits the bed on it, I'd consider a diesel swap. This has all the bells and whistles I want and the running gear is stout enough for anything I might want to use it for.. dont plan on towing anything significant anymore.

After driving my EL, driving his Excursion around town kicks it up a whole ‘nother notch. Highway is pretty similar but it’s a big mutha.

I think they were discontinued in 03, the 7.3 diesel a few years ago was bringing in a premium. I looked at an 02 F250 w 120k miles and it sold for twice what the gas version brought. I towed a sailboat across the country with one and it was really sweet to drive. Hardly knew it was back there.

Final year for the truck was ‘05; the diesel was downsized to the 6.0 for the last few years but it still pulled like a mule.

Although I never wanted a pickup truck and don't particularly enjoy driving (or parking) one, our F-350 Powerstroke 6.7 is a monster towing and a great choice for a full time RVer. Though I kind of hate it as a daily driver, if we decide to upgrade to a trailer with a but more space and cargo capacity we'll be covered.

Normally driving with the 10,890 lb GVW 5th wheel in tow, you can actually accelerate and merge better than some gas passenger vehicles I've driven.

Crossing the country last summer, I set the cruise control on 65 and went straight up the Rockies without breaking a sweat or losing speed.

Engine braking like a mad bastard on the way down the other side was actually really smooth, too. Though going through Bighorn National Forest I did keep the speed in the 40s going back down because it was...twisty and steep. I didn't see much of the scenery.

Buying it in late 2021/early 2022 was a total nightmare with the market. New diesels were a 3-6 month crap shoot on when you'd get one. We saw a Ram dealer with a $10,000 "Market adjustment fee" on the sticker of a new full ton diesel he had on the lot. Dealers were snapping up used stock and private sellers were asking incredible prices. Used diesels were selling for almost as much as new ones, and at a bare discount off their original sticker years before.

If you could even get one. I tried to put a deposit on a truck we found four hours away before I came to see it, and the dealer told me "we're not taking deposits on trucks right now." He told me that if I wanted the truck, I'd do best to show up with a cashier's check for the asking price (~$60K), but he couldn't guarantee the truck would be there when I showed up.

I gather the market has calmed down now, though there's still a lot of stupidity.

He got some money, go check the beggar's plate over at GFM.
Yeah but most of the donations came more than 3 weeks ago. give the thread age I’d say he didn’t get much from here. furthermore he’s been stuck on 4300 for a couple of weeks. He’d have done better panhandling in San Diego.

14-A out of Burgess junction is a piece of cake from when I drove it in the 70's. Scary as shit then. The last stretch is a 10% grade straight off the shoulder of the mountains. I was doing 90mph happy as a clam heading to Red Lodge when I noticed a car gaining on me in my rearview mirror. It was a trooper who pulled up along side of me and waved and left me in the dust. That was back when speed limits were "Reasonable and safe due to conditions"
