Incorrect. Or at least off target.
He dropped the price to get the model under 50K. That qualifies them for the US gov tax credit of $7500 per car. This gets the price down to low 40s. About the same as an ICE Camry.
More importantly, it s a giant kick in the nuts to Ford. Ford has been having issues producing EVs. They have quality issues EVERYWHERE making them lose money. And they just increased the price of F150 lightenings by $40,000 for 2023. They are going to have to retract much of that increase. And forget about increasing estang prices.
Tesla has a LOT of competition coming online.
Ford is floundering, Stellantis is a joke when it comes to EVs, and GM wants to flood the market with cheap shit boxes built in China (they own a large equity in many of the EV companies in CCP).
VW/AUDI is about to unleash multiple models based on a common platform
Tesla can sit there and hope things get better, or they can attack before others get a foothold.
Add to the fact Elon is pissed at the Biden administration ignoring Telsa while lavishing praise on Ford and GM. They were not even invited to the EV summit at the white house even though they sold more cars than all the other manufacturers combined. He is out to make his competition look bad. Ego?? Likely.
Tesla is master of margin. Toyota admits Tesla is 7x more profitable per unit then they are. How is Tesla 7x better than the company that took out the big 3 in the 80s and 90s by building higher quality cars at a lower price? how is GM or Ford to compete when they have not been able to for the past 30 years.
Yes they are shafting the owners of the lower end Teslas ( cuts only affect the low end models), but making the cars more affordable puts a warning shot across the bows of the competition. The cut opens up the mid range market where volume is king as long as you are profitable (see Margin King above). They are out to bankrupt their competition with a preemptive strike.
I do not have the numbers, but Tesla fanbois are some of the most loyal and hang onto their cars since the style does not change year to year and they never wear out (or so they say..). so they will not be affected since they are going to drive theirs into the ground.
I believe Elon's thinking is if some flippers get burned, fuck em..
You seem to have the scoop on EV's; what do you recomend for the most cost effecive small EV or hybrid for daily under 50 mile routine to be garaged and plugged back in after?? Used or new, and warranty very important to me, don't want any expensive surprises.
