Except it wasn't. It was called Emirates Team New Zealand.

Which set the tone. No national team carries the prefix of the sponsor, let alone a sponsor which effectively is another country
Emirates..... where have I seen them in the news lately? Oh yes, they are the ones laundering Russian money to help pay for the invasion...

“The UAE is a big hole in the bucket,” Karen Greenaway, a former FBI agent, explained. “The movement of money — and we can’t see it — allows Russia to continue to run its economy and its war economy.”

Where in the world are Russians going to avoid sanctions?

Oracle didn't represent the USA and Luna Rosa is not an Italian team?

Is the current defender now a Spanish national team then?
Man Utd represent England when they play EUFA cup (or would do if they weren't so crap). That doesn't make them a national team.
You can (and of course we have had) multiple entries from one country. So clearly they aren't national teams whatever names they choose.

But a visitor from Mars would probably assume ETNZ is representing UA Emirates as they are first in name, or possibly is a joint entry

But the Deed doesn't. So he can fuck off with his whinging.
I think it could be argued that the Deed does intend 'courses' to have a very different meaning from 'venue.'

Nobody challenged the Bermuda choice, presumably because nobody cared enough to.

hey michael can we have our banks, telecomunications, railways, electricity back now ?
You are so right comrade. The Queen St oligarchs stole from our mother country. Then they used that money to fund a boat race! And they tricked the public to thinking this was a fantastic idea that the public treated them like heros and paraded them. When in fact they should have been walking them to that invention made by French peasants.

Michael Fay, the man that ambushed the San Diego yacht club, then claimed they weren't being fair and weren't "behaving like sportsmen, and weren't "behaving like a Defender". Fay used the element of surprise to catch the San Diego Yacht club on the bounce with the big boat challenge, and then when they called his bluff, and he realised he'd been out gunned, and had no chance of winning, he started pulling the same irrelevant emotional heart strings he's pulling now, even though he's the one who ambushed the San DIego Yacht club! The same pattern is emerging now, as was evident then, from the playbook of Michael Fay. Make a whole lot of bold claims, then when you lose, play the victim. Screw Michael Fay. He never won the Americas Cup, so has no clue what he's talking about. And he can take that weasel Andrew Johns with him. Johns was Fays right hand man in the ambush challenge. Alan Sefton, now thats a different story... Alan has been hugely successful and influential in the AC with Team NZ, and it is surprising to see him follow Michael Fay and Andrew Johns out the door, but, with all due respect, its not the 90's any more. Move with the times, adapt or die, and thats exactly the situation the RNZYS and ETNZ are in, and they've adapted.

Fay tried to win the cup in 1988 by using a legal loop hole. After getting thrashed on the water he tied it up in court winning, then losing the cup again. Can you imagine if NZ had won the cup in court rather than on the water in 95? What an embarrassment. Fuck off Fay, that's not the kiwi way.

So, why hasn't any of the disaffected rabble (Fay included) taken it to court already - seeing that interpretation is such a winner?

Yes, reasonable questions. Perhaps because you'd need standing?

The venue subject did get raised by many here in the 2010 DoG Match but Oracle never pressed this particluar 'courses' argument, they just wanted it to be in Valencia.

But entries from clubs not countries. Or at least according to the deed from clubs. Essentially now from corporations hiding behind clubs
JFC...

And those clubs are not part of a nation or country? What country does the NYYC represent? What country does - enter your local yacht club here - represent?

And those corporations aren't associated with their country of origin?

.....Friendly competition between nations.......

Regardless of your mental state!

Pedantic

Emirates Team Catalonia is an abomination and why they need to lose sooner rather than later!

Is Oracle a US company?

Are Prada and Pirelli Italian Companies?

"This Cup is donated upon the conditions that it shall be preserved as a perpetual
Challenge Cup for friendly competition between foreign countries.

Any organized Yacht Club of a foreign country, incorporated, patented, or licensed by the
legislature, admiralty, or other executive department, having for its annual regatta an
ocean water course on the sea, or on an arm of the sea, or one which combines both,
shall always be entitled to the right of sailing a match of this Cup..."

Under the Americas Cup Deed Of Gift, Emirates Team NZ is, by definition, a National Team, as they compete under the Yacht club that represents this country in the Americas Cup.
