Prada adopted a deliberately combative approach in Auckland. It was calculated to try to derail ETNZ, and that's fine, it's a tough sport on and off the water, Max knew exactly what he was doing - as did GD.
Luna Rossa engaged Butterworth in Auckland to make a nuisance of himself. I can't remember his made up title but it was all about causing trouble and trying to make ETNZ take their eye off the ball.

Exactly, it's the rugby equivalent of niggle. Try to provoke your opposition, so they lose focus. Which is fine, but GD is no idiot, and was on to their antics from the get go, and was more than a match for Butters - who's heart IMHO was not really into it. He knew the Kiwis had a great boat, and that the Italians were on a hiding to nothing, and in the end got flogged, by being too conservative in their foil choice.

Survived so far in body at least. Have had a terrible time with lack of sleep. We have a new roof flashing around a sky light in our apartment, which has been thrashing around in the wind - bang, bang, bang. Fortunately no leaks, but that won't last, if I can't get it sorted soon. Its rivets will be flogged out and it'll become a flying saucer, along with the Velux no doubt.

My neighbours recon it has kept them awake too. Fair enough. If I can't sleep, why should they, right?

Wow, can understand that keeping you awake.

Has the worst of the storm passed yet?

Is summer when you get this kind of weather? I realise this one is extreme.

Best wishes and best of luck to everyone in NZ.
I have lived in Auckland for about 60 years, normally in January and February we complain about the heat and berate the City for telling us to save water because of the lack of rain.

This year we have had three Cyclones in two weeks. In the first one four people lost their lives partly because it was the worst storm ever and we were not properly prepared.

Typical damage is houses being destroyed and roads being unpassable because of land slides, fallen trees and flooding.

Cars floating down the street, some washed out to sea.

Clicking "like" doesn't feel right but thank you.

Storms we get are mostly winter, coming across the Atlantic, which is why I asked about summer. My impression is that we are getting fewer than we used to.

You seem to be getting the weather we had at this time last year, when we had record floods, and virtually no summer. We had these slow moving lows just sucking in moisture and dumping huge quantities of rain. This year we've had a pretty good summer, and NZ seems to be getting all the shitty weather.

Yup it’s been pretty damned ruff here we lost a few trees and there is crap everywhere however it’s only stuff and everybody is safe.
This guy aboard his catamaran drifted across the worst of the conditions after his anchor failed at Great Barrier Island In the height of the storm.

After hours in seas that can only be described as horrendous the Navy and Coastguard came to his rescue.

Apparently he was in Port Fitzroy when the anchor cable snapped. Must have been very blowy, because it's very sheltered in there. That said, I would've had more than one anchor deployed in preparation for the storm. Expensive lesson.

Still blowing - around from the south to west now. I expect it will all be over sometime early tomorrow morning, hopefully.
It has finally calmed down in the Far North now. I spent the last three days helping save boats from smashing themselves apart against the marina. It's quite extraordinary how poorly some people leave their boats tied up, especially when everyone knew this was coming from a week out.

Sounds bad but it could be worse.

That area south of Tampa Bay in Florida this year saw boats washed sometimes for miles up inland, that along with the flimsy construction of so much crap made for a huge disaster.

Being so flat they did not have to deal with landslides though, which in some videos I saw from NZ looks to be a big problem this week. Washed out bridges, flooding coming down gulleys, etc. Dang..

The whole story doesn't make sense. How did he drift out of Port Fitzroy to where he was rescued?

I agree, it's weird....He didn't have a 2nd anchor? Who has a boat that size without at least two anchors? It is quite deep at the entrance to Port Fitzroy - I've memories of drift fishing in that area. So he might not have had enough warp to hold in storm conditions? It's also a long way from there to the Hen and Chicks as well.

Big light boat like that in those winds and fetch is going to cover a whole bunch of miles over nite.
