End-plate effect

Aside from documenting an increase in performance, what (if any) visual cues would there be when end-plating a jib should increase performance appreciably? For example, perhaps the behavior of specially-placed telltales.
At about 1m30s in this video you see a foiling dinghy with a smoke flare at the end of the boom. See the wind eddie. Endplating kills that eddie, which is just drag drag drag.

It’s only effective if it’s touching and it’s worth +2% drive force and-7% drag on an Imoca 60 j2. IF ITS TOUCHING. In the main north said that if you could get the first third of the foot done that would help “obviously” but would not give any numbers and said that it would be less than the jib.

Do the jib if it’s possible (if over a net it doesn’t work) and be happy with the space under the boom as you can see to leeward…

I have pondered about having a sail cloth extension to create an end plate. By using two panels off the foot of a (loose footed) mainsail, so when down (one either side of the boom) and tensioned (with battens as necessary), they are in endplate mode, similar to those seen on 49’ers, moths etc, only full length, and when up, they can be set up as part of a lazy jack/mainsail cover system.

You could mount/lash panels onto the netting along the foot of the jib to close off the airflow - pretty sure some of the Gunboats are experimenting with this.

I fashioned a wishbone with Dacron perpendicular around the boom of my 1970 home-built A-Cat. I swear it made a difference upwind. But Alex Kazlof, the measurer, said I had to remove that much sail area from the mainsail. Sigh

Marty,
A comparative approach could be appropriate
1- Telltales without endplating
2-Same telletales after enplating
Fair winds/EK
