Perception is reality when the cameras are on.Perception? Bullshit. All privately funded billionaires and overseas cash.
last time I looked all the teams were set up in bases in NZ and didn’t need to do a dog and pony show around Europe and the Middle East in 40ft boats bought from the defender.
they could have said build a new 75 race boat and be done with it, No 40 foot race circuit no hydrogen boats
Stay in your current bases so nobody has to relocate again
Thank you and your new little gem of people being the most expensive commodity? why didn’t they just limit the team size. 100 staff including sailing, shore and design team and get on with it
Instead they went with the number of Boats you had to buy or Build and that’s apparently the cheapest thing.
It’s the Americas cup please please don’t pretend any of it is about saving money and making it cheaper or more accessible or hugging trees or looking after dolphins because it just isn’t
And you think moving predominantly European teams, families and all from Europe to NZ is cheaper than basing European teams in Europe? Really? Holding the event in Europe drastically reduces logistical resource and cost.
Current bases have been dismantled, so there are no current bases except the Team NZ base.
Why didn't they limit team size? How? If you're going to limit team size you have to say no team may outsource design or build to external companies. Everything must be done in house, from design, to build, to testing. There is NO WAY you can tell a team they can not out source. INEOS Team UK has out sourced design to Mercedes. Alinghi has out sourced, or at least partnered with Red Bull, Team NZ and LR have both out sourced different areas of design and build to external companies. So there is no REAL way to limit team size unless out sourcing is prohibited, and that realistically can not and should not happen.
They went with boats, because boats aren't the biggest cost of a campaign, the people are. Thats why the AC40 exists, so teams don't need to design and build their own test boats, cutting down on design resource and cost. One AC75 instead of 2, like last time.
A lot of people, especially on here have been bitching about costs, when really, in reality, there have been ways introduced to this AC that do reduce cost. The fact that teams choose to spend what ever they like, despite the effort to reduce costs, doesn't change that.
