I have money burning a hole in my pocket for 2 new vehicles. EV is not in the running but one or two Hybrids are. In my research I have seen insurance bump’s mentioned several times and that one should check with your insurance company and see just what the extra cost would be. One of the Hybrids I am considering would be the new Prius, I’d have to actually sit in one first. After riding high in SUV’s for 30 years and enjoying the safety of the better visibility and mass it would take some getting used to. It’s not the government’s place to put their thumbs on the scale of adopting EV’s when we have hundreds of years of gas and diesel while the market place sorts it out.At some point, they'll mandate a flat pricing, bake that extra cost into the broader market, and just make everyone pay the premium - the thumb is already on the scales, the government is not going to overlook something as trivial as insurance premiums for very long.
I'm a HUGE fan of improved efficiency and right-sizing vehicles. I like high efficiency ICEs. I like hybrids. I even like EVs for certain applications. One of my old corworkers had a PERFECT use case - 5 days, back and forth city driving, 8 miles, 21 stops. Charged his Leaf, drove to work, drove home, plugged it in, repeat. BEAUTIFUL. Perfect car for the job. Saved more gas-equivalent in a week than one of my neighbors wasted warming up their surburban every morning. I would love to see some innovation into warming up cars in the morning so idiot neighbors wouldn't have the excuse to idle their behemoth for 20 minutes.
Here's some, you know, actual auto insurance annual premium data, in case anyone's interested (four drivers, including two teens, full coverage on all cars):
2005 Dodge RAM 3500, $765.11
2008 Honda Accord, $937.96
2016 Kia Sedona, $1207.66
2023 Chevy Bolt EUV, $1647.27
About half the cost of coverage scales with the Blue Book value of the car so newer cars, regardless of whether ICE or EV, cost more to insure. In 7 years, I fully expect my new Bolt to cost about what my 2016 Kia costs to insure today, adjusted for inflation.
The Suburu Impreza IS a high risk car, because so many teeny boppers own them and it's a favorite car to mod, turbo, and race. It's a sports car.Insurance is strange as my 2007 Base Impreza cost still cost more to Insure to Insure than my 2019 Silverado nicely equipped

The current EV issue is minor battery/container damage is getting the cars totaled as while recycling is getting better there is way right now for cost effective repairs on the battery
I'll trust my insurance company's actuarial tables and premium rates over any sort of popular media coverage of this issue.
