One of the reasons we've held off on an EV. Insurance premium would more than double.

Scratched EV battery? Your insurer may have to junk the whole car

I read a story (thought I posted it in this thread) about a shitload of low mileage EVs being totaled and scrapped, for just this reason.
I think this refers to the Tesla Model Y's structural battery pack. I don't know that it applies to any other EV.

The structural battery pack takes unibody construction a little further and reduces weight by about 15%. I haven't heard about scratched EV battery packs or high insurance on the Tesla and EV forums I follow which are mostly Teslarati and teslamotorsclub.com.

However, I do have a dog in this fight because I'm sorta kinda in the market and I'm NOT going to buy a Y until I figure this out. Luckily, I have a rather nice S and so there's no hurry. I am looking at other EVs as well.

I went from a junky old 4runner to a fairly new Nissan Leaf and there was no difference in premium.

As for totalling a car for a scratched battery. You'd have to work really hard on doing that. Mine has a protective plate that is not part of the battery and would take quite a lot of abuse to get punctured.

The problem with a battery pack aren't punctures but cracked leads. There are hundreds of serial\parallel connections and the problem is current distribution across blocks of batteries during charging. It's practically impossible to rebuild a battery pack if it's aged.

Can an individual rebuild one? Sure. Can a company rebuild one and guarantee performance and safety? Absolutely not worth it.

Not necessarily. Blunt force trauma from an impact can crack the junctions. It's more akin to a concussion and less akin to a knife wound.

The batteries are generally in a structural case that is not only strong enough to support the substantial weight of the batteries themselves, but also to add rigidity to the vehicle. In addition, there's usually a skid plate mounted below the case and it's surrounded by the vehicle frame on all sides, including crush zones.

If a collision event is energetic enough to crush or puncture the battery case, the accident is unlikely to be one you'll walk away from.

Saw a Lucid car today. Very impressive looking and I looked at the specs, 1000 hp, 0-60 in 2 secs and a 500 mile range. Tell me again how the ICE is going to remain relevant?

Whilst getting everybody to drive an EV would hardly affect the overall pollution from ICE engines. How many big trucks are spewing stuff into the atmosphere. Do you really think there is technology today that can be put into use for big trucks. Just look at the huge loads they are hauling all over the country. Put a boat trailer on your EV and see what happens to your milage.

Most of those are vapourware. Two things jump out immediately, payload and range and EV dont have that.
If we stopped pumping oil out of the ground it is not just fuel.

There is only a limited supply of oil on this planet and we are using it a lot faster than it is replenished. That is what makes it so incredibly dumb to burn it in an ICE engine at a well to wheel efficiency of just a little over 10%.

@LB 15, would you like a list of anything that goes wrong with gasoline, propane, diesel and other petroleum products?
The little bit of research on statistics that has been done shows that per driven mile a gasoline car is 11 times more likely to completely burn to the ground than an EV.

The little bit of research is why you should be skeptical. Do you 'little bit of research' show many petrol cars suddenly combusting for no apparent reason? Don't get me wrong I think EV's are great for you inner city boys. Just perfect for taking your miniature poodles to their grooming appointment. Or getting to that LGPTQ rally.
I just don't want one of the fucking dangerous things anywhere near me.
