I was just texting with one of the race officials, longtime sailing friend, I asked how many boats were going to start from the beach since “Plan B” start option is in effect and he said only about 10-12 boats starting from the beach today. Plan B allows entrants to start anywhere north of Check Point 1 after the official start time
It is always different for the Everglades Challenge.

It's hard to understate the effect of Red Tide - think "chemical weapon".
It's a neurotoxin - with many effects. So, the respiratory is just a small introduction. It enters the brain within 10 seconds of breathing it.
It can easily do permanent damage - especially to those often exposed or who are sensitive. But it's still harming everyone else....they just don't know it yet.
It's even tied to ALS and Dementia onset now.

If you want to read just one study that's starting to expose the reality (finding it in the blood after 6 months), check this out.

There is a giant cover-up, of course. It won't be fixed because that would be hard and would take regulations and money. Freedom means freedom to dump chit everywhere.

A few weeks back I was exposed for 10 minutes near the Bay - got sick instantly for 5 days (respiratory).
Yesterday I was exposed for one hour near the Bay (sarasota). Immediately after I developed the classic "shellfish poisoning" - it was heavy duty. Almost decided to go to the hospital, but I knew what it was so waited it out.

You have been warned. It's hard to imagine how some folks say they don't notice is as much....since I have no pre-existing conditions and yet it's like a Truck hitting me! I believe there are a few issues at work:
1. Denial
2. Lack of Ability to understand and tie together problems with exposure
3. For whatever reason, some people are more "immune"....although this is hard to understand, it's part of the study.

Now, whether they are truly immune...or whether they will get early onset dementia or other diseases later....is all an open question. Here is a little attached story. I have dozens like it from just the last few weeks.

Red Tide has been around as long as recorded history

My mother moved off Manasta Key in the 90’s due to reaction to red tides. She always suffered from allergies, and one way she felt with them was by living close to the water where on shore winds were free from pollen. The red tide thing was a negative game changer.

I went to visit the CP1 crew yesterday. At my level of sensitivity (low) red tide caused me to cough once or twice. MolaMola reported that she had to wear her face shield.

Zero the Hero and his wife were having tracker issues but it started working and they departed.

Then everybody wandered off and left Starr the Clowndog in charge of the checkpoint.

We started at Anna Maria Bridge. Got to cp1 at 200 am. Light ssw winds all day, stayed inside. Reports were that stump Pass was A beast. Many near misses.

Red tide was awful yesterday. Lots of dead fish. Unpleasant.

Currently slowly making way down pine island sound. Light winds from west at moment. Maybe 6 knots. Wil probably drop to zero tonight. Not sure our plans at the moment. Will decide at Sanibel bridge about sundown.

Red Tide has been around as long as recorded history

Very simple. But I fully understand if you don't want to accept it.

Florida gubment does not mention it is a dangerous neurotoxin that enters the brain in a few seconds.
Florida Government has many web sites, some telling you that can swim in it (NO! Don't!).
Florida Government actually sent an order to all state agencies requiring that they never mention that human activity is responsible for increased blooms.
Florida Government has pulled funding and/or scientists off of projects when they told the truth (that runoff aggravated it).
Rick Scott ordered that the words "global warming" and "climate change" not be used by any agency he had control over. Neither was the term "Red Tide" allowed to be used unless it was preceded by "Natural Occurring".
It looks like he did a good job convincing you! I can't blame you when you heard that for a decade or more.

It has only happened yearly since 1998.....in ALL of recorded history. There are no records of it happening to this degree this often...that is, we had 16 months straight of it in 2018. I looked through 25 years of official mapping to confirm that, but it's confirmed by the yearly thing.

Hey, if you approve of Billions of gallons of chit flowing into the water and overloading it with nutrients, so be it. Maybe Powerboating would be better for you?

It's just too far from basic logic and reason to tell me that Billions of gallons of chit doesn't feed plants. They spread manure on farms because it makes plants grow. They water golf course with "chit water" because stuff grows better.

Oh, and real scientists now agree it's fed by mankind. Please don't quote Mote or "scientists" funded by the State of FL (they fired some who told the truth).

But, hey, if you are fine with dead bays and neurotoxins - more power to you. I know that in Florida, environmentalism is "woke". Clean water is "woke". Limiting Development is "woke". So Florida is where woke goes to die....your right to boat in chit will be upheld.

Is the ‘red tide’ you guys are talking about the same as what is called ‘algae bloom’ in Australia?

In most cases, no.
This is because the one with the neurotoxin is very rare. So although there are blooms and "red tide" in other places, it likely is not as dangerous. Look up your blooms and see if they contain the neurotoxin.

"harmful algae Karenia brevis, which release a powerful a neurotoxin called brevetoxin"

We not only have that kind, but we have it sometimes for a full year or more.
It's been present about 40% of the time since I've owned a house here in Sarasota.....now, some would ask "why did you buy?" - well, it wasn't present at all 5 of the 6 years I rented and looked down here! So it was a "5 or 10% of the time" situation which is acceptable.

How long have you lived in Florida?
Perhaps there is a direct correlation between your kraiggiri toxin and the Karenia brevis

First of my EC videos, this one is a bit lame because I shot it with my cell phone with no editing capability, but to follow I have Gopro footage of each ; Stump Pass, Gasparilla, and South Caxambas pass. I haven't been able to look at the footage yet, but I think it will be good.

Basically, we were racing really well and on track but in the chaos of 6 or 7 boats launching on the high tide out of CP2 at 3 am with an onshore wind, we clipped a submerged piling and nearly sunk the boat. So I got a drive down to Key Largo and shot a vid of some of the faster boats at the Finnish line.
