I never charge friends and family for the usual couple hours of advice/research/background checks. If they hire me to form a company or draft offering documents, its full price.
I hate a lot of lawyers too, though I find on balance they are both smarter and more ethical than the average human.
My last stint at school was two semesters of Contract Law, from an engineering and technology perspective.
I have to say they were the most enjoyable courses I have done. After thinking that there was nothing better than binary black and white fact and fiction world, unexpectedly I saw the fascination with grey, reasonableness, consideration and fuzzy concepts generally.
Didn't need to use it much because I was producing business proposals and offers before and after that, but dealt with them with increased confidence. That was why I bothered.
Oh, probably the only time the contract training came in handy, was the use a a standard Master Builder contract used here by Licensed builders to get their insurance covered by their weak as piss association. It contained clauses to allow the builder to reconstruct a washed out access to the construction site, charge the owner, in any way and for whatever that cost, without consulting the owner of the property. That was modified to the obvious surprise of our builder.
So in hindsight, I enjoyed the way to legal world changes how you think, to be able to deal with ambiguous situations a little better.
