I've repeatedly wondered about this.

'Subpoena' in Latin simply means 'under penalty (or pain) of...' something undescribed. Subpoenas often end with the archaic threat "Fail not at your peril."

In TFG's case, non-compliance with a Federal subpoena way back in May should, on the face of it, have produced some sort of penalty. He and many of his acolytes seem to think you can just ignore a subpoena. Is there a penalty? If so, what?

In my experience with animals, especially dogs, they have a natural inclination to look for a leader to follow. If that lead dog, or biggest and nastiest gorilla, is a dangerous fucking brute well... it almost helps that instinct. My now ex-wife dragged me into Scientology 25 years ago. We did 10 years, and spent $150k or more. We were very low level and living 'outside,' but I was astonished by the many apparently intelligent people who'd been sucked right into the vortex, yet couldn't see the big trap for what it was.

Check out a book called, "The True Believer" by Eric Hoffer which was published in 1951. The basic idea of the book is that all mass movements, Nazism, evangelical Christianity (or Islam) are fundamentally the same. Wonderful book to read.
