Oregon is easier other than the odd bridge event and the state parks are very nice, yeah a little developed but has some really good seafood for lunches and lots of bakeries and espresso, it’s more user friendly and there’s more shoulder. Crescent City to Eureka was not that much fun with narrow roads and logging trucks paid by tons delivered and most were dangerous fuckheads. Once below Scotia and then when on 1 from Legget to San Francisco it’s a joy.

I bicycled extensively in Italy, France, .... Once I was bicycling there and sensed something behind. I looked back and it was a massive semi going about 10 mph. He wasn't gonna pass me. Cycling is put on a pedestal in Europe that it isn't here.

Yeah, I kind of torqued my knee and then hurt the opposite achilles compensating trying to keep up with some racers well above my pay grade and had to bail and cycle in to Eugene.

I've also done SF to Santa Cruz many times, both one day and staying at the Pigeon Point Hostel, and SF to SLO. I don't really want to cycle South of SB though. I cycled on the PCH in LA and well, I won't be doing that again.

France is amazing. The small road system from village to village is like bike paths that go places. Nothing on them but locals and ag vehicles. Need to go back and tour there again. No need to go below Santa Barbara/Carp. Agree with you on that.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. IMHO, lawyers who resort to legalese are attempting to show how learned they are, and to make the topic arcane to the uninitiated. Not all lawyers stoop to these artifices, but USA lawyers in particular are notable for doing it.

Missed it. went by yesterday before my flight but it was closed during the day. Austin was a blast but it made me happy to not be homeless and reminded me to bust my ass harder at work.

My special lady was working late on Friday and I suggested going out for breakfast for dinner at a decent 24 hour restaurant. Well, used to be open 24 hours, but now closes at midnight, which I didn’t know. We wound up at Denny’s next to the interstate at 2:00 a.m.

I am sharply recommitted to work.

We plain English legal draftsmen used to joke that commercial lawyers are paid by the word. That isn't stretching the truth very far at all.

I'd be happy to send you a link to some of my work, which I guarantee you would be able to read and understand perfectly, with no wondering about interpretation. Canadian legal drafters also strive for plain English, but my experience working with many of them suggests that they have a way to go.

Following are a couple of provisions from an Act that imposed minimum pricing for alcohol products in a certain Australian jurisdiction. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only legislation in the world that includes a recipe for an alcoholic cocktail! I couldn't believe that I got away with that .

Meaning of standard drink

(1) A standard drink is the volume of a liquor product that contains 10 g of ethyl alcohol when measured at 20°C.

(2) The following formula is used to calculate the number of standard drinks in a liquor product:

SD = V x ABV x 0.789

where:

SD = the number of standard drinks.

V = volume of the liquor product in litres.

ABV = the alcohol content by volume of the liquor product – as indicated on the product label (expressed as a percentage).

0.789 = the specific gravity of ethyl alcohol.

Example for subsection (2)

A 250 ml glass of wine from a bottle where the product label shows 6% alcohol content would contain 1.18 standard drinks, obtained by multiplying the volume in litres of the sale by the alcohol content, multiplied by 0.789:

0.25 x 6 x 0.789 = 1.18

Note that some product labels will indicate the number of standard drinks contained in the product container.

Mixed sales

If a liquor sale or liquor sale offer is made up of different components (for example, a cocktail drink, or a premixed liquor product), the number of standard drinks contained in the liquor sale or liquor sale offer is the sum of the standard drinks in each component of the liquor that contains alcohol.

Example for this section

A margarita cocktail comprises 40 ml tequila, 20 ml orange liqueur, lime juice, salt and ice.

0.040 L tequila at 35% alcohol x 0.789 = 1.1 standard drinks

0.020 L orange liqueur at 40% alcohol x 0.789 = 0.63 standard drinks

lime juice, salt and ice – no alcohol content

total standard drinks = 1.1 + 0.63 = 1.73 standard drinks.

Yeah, there's a big difference between trying to make complex stuff easily understandable and setting out to make relatively simple stuff arcane so as to appear learned. It's a bit similar to writing code - some achieve elegance, others get there in the end through sheer processor power.

Yeah I always maintained that it was easier & cheaper to buy a faster computer than get a smarter programmer...

*Generally* speaking decent software developers understand how to write elaborate case blocks so you can parse out all the possible branches though.
