Yeah it was a great game by Australia. Soaked up the pressure for the first 20 minutes, keeping a good defensive shape, Argentina could not get through or around our defence. Then we had a period on the ball but then a rush of blood in defence that led to the freekick that Messi eventually scored from caused us all to go...good effort but what can you do v Messi?

And then the Maty Ryan howler in goal for the 2nd goal caused spirits to fall but then a miracle happened and we got a goal from a deflection...GAME ON, and then we almost took it to extra time in the final couple of minutes. Great performance by the boys and well above expectations.

In the end I think Argentina were happy to not over exert themselves and were happy to get over the line. Their reaction and celebration with the crowd after the match showed how much it meant to them. I wish them the best v Netherlands and then most likely Brazil in Semi.

I stopped watching the Aus match as soon as the Australians started fouling as badly as those teams I can't stand to watch.

And France wins against Poland, and is through for the quarter finals..
IMHO, they will have to tighten up some loose bolts in defense, if they want to progress much further. The Polish action at 37' got my blood pressure spiking...

Also, referring was average, at best. On one of the French actions, the Polish goalkeeper punch the ball away, falls down and hurt his back. The referee blows the whistle immediately, not letting the action finish by a superb goal for France. If the referee had waited 3 seconds, he could have called for VAR after the goal, and check if there was a foul or not, and then decide if he accepted the goal or not. The replay does not show any foul on the goal keeper, IMHO, but there was a knee jerk reaction from the referee: you touch the goal keeper in the air, foul...
And since he had blown the whistle, there was no coming back to accept the goal.

Some amateurish mistakes on the French side as well. There was a last minute penalty for Poland, fully deserved. Lewandowski shoots the penalty, with a pause in his run to the ball, and Lloris, the French goalkeeper stops it! But the referee had the penalty kick shot again, because a French defense player stepped into the zone before Lewandowski touched the ball... And not by just a bit. So new penalty kick by Lewandowski and this time he gets it in the net...

Our commentators initially thought the same, but on replay think the foul was against a defending player.
