Finn sailing

Joined in for the NZ Finn Masters over the weekend. Smaller fleet than normal with no Wellington / SI boats. Weather and school holidays the 2 big reasons. 13 boats sailed. I was lent a boat to make up the numbers - an old Marten.
9 races over 3 days. I stayed upright and didn't come last. Not quite ready to trade out of the Laser yet but good fun. Serious boat porn with all the NZ Olympic squad boats now sold to "normal" sailors. They are so nicely detailed.
You need to get a finn mate....:)

This just in from Pencil re chartering for Finn Masters: "I spoke with Filipe Silva this morning and he confirmed my Fantastica for Kavala. He has 5 Fantastica's and 5 Classics and I am first to book. Filipe was recommended by Rob McMillan as having the best charter boats so I decided to get in early given we are now about 40 charter boats worse off now the Olympic campaigners are off the scene."
Interesting that lack of charter boat availability following the olympic decision is becoming a limiting factor of Masters regattas...not popularity of the class...but lack of charter boats to meet demand...previously charters were avail from olympic reps!!

The other week a few of us here in Melbourne (Oz) packed our boats for a road trip to Adelaide for the Sth Aust state titles....a round trip of nearly 1600kms (1000miles)...weather was a challenge but we got 4 races in (the last with gusts to 30kts)...and made some great friendships...most of us staying with host Finn families. The Finn family just encourages that kind of commitment..mates, new and old, great social scene and competitive stuff on the water...I managed to snap a tiller extension just prior to the first start, so with a dash to get a replacement, missed it by just over a minute..so my regatta result was cooked...but the memories and mateship made the effort of attending well worth it. Road trips are generally big ones here in Oz (Nats will be 2500miles) and with fuel at well over $2 a litre (~$8 a gallon) it's an expensive undertaking...but the camaraderie makes it worthwhile...that's the Finn thing.
