A bit rough on the SD racing fleet and organizers ED.

Yes the Cabrillo III was canned and for good reason (almost every offshore race up and down the coast was also cancelled BTW). SD boats are setup for light air, when you push them into heavy air things go bad. One guy killed and another guy we both know nearly lost at sea in a big air event last year... Most of us don't have a death wish.

We have five new boats in our fleet this year (some good sailors, some not so good). Not new high tech sporties but regular boats sailed by regular people who are getting into racing.

The Beer Cans series in SD is the biggest on the west coast.

Has it ever occurred to you that sailing is just what it is, the sport has been roughly the same for 100 years. some and one can only assume most, like it that way.

Also the pressures of day to day life for most in the last ten years of this economy are such that sailing is not on the priority list right now...

Instead of bitching about (your perception) of all that is wrong with sailing in SD and blaming the organizers and sailing industry for (your perceived) lack of participation. Front up some ideas of your own!

Liberal commie solution: raise taxes on the rich and give every 16 year old kid their own Farr 40.

Horny male solution: Pay 20 year old women to sail nude. The best spot for spectators will be on other sailboats, thereby populating the starting line.

Drunkard solution: Make the entire crew take a shot after every tack, set, gybe, and douse. The crews that finish get a prize.

Fatass solution: Fill the boat with twinkies and advertise for rail meat at IHOP.

NRA solution: Invite a gunslinger, but don't tell him what getting a bullet really means.

Well, I guess I disagree. If I recall correctly the forecast was for 25 to 30 with localized gusts to 35 out of the dead South and seas of 9-13' with a 5 foot wind chop on top of that out of the West making for some pretty square waves. Sounded pretty bad to me. FWIW we went out a little past Zuniga jetty on Sunday but turned around when we realized we were looking down the pipe (into the tube) of waves breaking several hundred yards south of us and we realized how big they were for the tube to be visible at that distance. I totally agree with Movable that you don't want to send boats out into that kind of crap.

As for not innovating well, I guess I just disagree with that as well. There are a lot of good things happening around town such as that the PHRF boards are now rating and including multi-hulls including everything from "Mighty Mer Loe" (ex-Groupama) at -153 across on down.

I wanted to point this out even though I realized that the FP article was placed partially to drive hits to this site and perhaps, hopefully, partially in order to get people thinking. I just wish someone would realize on their end that the same point can be made with either a positive or a negative intent.

Here are a few suggestions for Scot, as he is an owner of a Sport Boat (Big Dinghy really).

1. Form an SD Sport Boat Association. I mean like your Shaw and Viper type sport boats not the heavier.The more people that see you out having fun planning around the more will buy into the concept.
   
2. When the Local Clubs cancel races, Go and and RABBIT START your fleet.
   
3. If you want to build fleet racing, buy into fleets that already have a foot hold in the region (So Cal).Buying a boat just because it is cool can keep you on the outside looking in.
   

When it is blowing 20+ there is less traffic on the bay and in most places, That is when you hit the water.

Remember, that is what we used to do when races were cancelled up in the Nard.

I remember right after Gary bought his SC 27 and this happened.

We loaded the boat up with about 8 of us and went out. We sailed for about 2 hours up wind for a 20 minute high speed ride home.

That was fun.

Wasn't there some independent group that organized s Sport Boat inter-Galactic championship on the South Bay a few years back ? What ever happened to them ?

Did they get out of the sport and into social commentary on issues regarding public policy and grift ?

It always helps to work with those in power rather than bash them, especially if you are local.

I've been dealing with this on the Disabled Sailing front at the USS level. They just do not care about the west coast, so I have given up.

My biggest problem is the hype/communication aspect. How hard is it to put out a list of entries or at least get the SI up on a website?

What if I could go to sailinganarchy.com/sandiego and find out all the races going on for my Class or One Design or at least be able to search the myriad of list available from a SA based search engine?

I bet you could get local business to sponsor the hometown page and build it from there. Want to race in LB or San Dog or wherever, check SA/hometown.

Craigslist has to be a pretty good model for it and it would force organizers to get off their ass and make sure their event made it to the page.
