Anyone who has never read “Bedfellows” probably should.Steve has given me copies of a few books, we already had 1st editions of several. My favorite is his collection of essays on democracy, rather trenchant these days.

Agreed. As timely today as 60 years ago.Anyone who has never read “Bedfellows” probably should.
Having had three dachshunds over the years, I can say that E.B. knew what he was talking about.Agreed. As timely today as 60 years ago.
The description of Fred somewhat reminds me of Thurber’s Scotty Who knew Too Much.
We had several in the early years of our marriage. They can unhinge their lower jaw to swallow something bigger than their head. Lot’s of opinions and insist on sharing them.Having had three dachshunds over the years, I can say that E.B. knew what he was talking about.
Fred was not an aberration.
Our smallest one ate an entire small ham that was left out on a kitchen counter. She barfed that up for days. She also ate an entire bowl of peanuts, and shat Snickers bars for a week.We had several in the early years of our marriage. Yum. We had lobster tails for New Year's Eve dinner last night. Somehow, it's not quite the same sitting in Florida eating them as it is on the boat in Maine...
She could be going home, to the Chesapeake. But it's a long shot at this point in time.Yum. We had lobster tails for New Year's Eve dinner last night. Somehow, it's not quite the same sitting in Florida eating them as it is on the boat in Maine...
Wonder what's going to happen to Victory Chimes?
We love Maine too, but sailing and snorkeling on New Years Eve is pretty great too. You can always go back and forth!Ah, Maine. My wife keeps commenting, “Why did you come all this way?” “Maine is prettier.” “ I like Maine lobster better” ….etc… I keep telling her it’s so she can appreciate it more.![]()
We had one that was a sonofabitch to train. Definitely smart but too smart. Instead of just learning not to piss and dump in the house, he learned to be clever and sneaky about it, then he would give us the “Who, me?” innocent look. He would give us the same look after chasing off the neighbor’s dog from our front sidewalk. He wasn’t smart enough to know the poodle fluff sticking to his teeth was a dead giveaway.Having had three dachshunds over the years, I can say that E.B. knew what he was talking about.

Also there’s a happy middle place. We just had our annual New Year’s Day sail in NC - beautiful here today. We love Maine too, but sailing and snorkeling on New Years Eve is pretty great too. You can always go back and forth!

That's great. We like the early winter and early spring in NC (and visit family there then). If you can choose your days to sail I bet there are good ones all year long.We just had our annual New Year’s Day sail in NC - beautiful here today.
What watermaker did you put in?Our sailboat only has a 70 gallon water tank and if we are super careful and use it sparingly when we are out cruising we can last a week and a half until we run out. We finally bought a watermaker two years ago and we just love it! We just run our generator for 3 hours when we use it and we can make about 80+ gallons of RO water in that time.
