Faux wood on fiberglass.

Impressive skill and execution.

But it feels like I'm eating food from a tube or drinking alcohol-free wine.

You might remember the first Daysailer 42 that Hinckley built had faux-wood-painted spars. It proved unpopular, though in principle it's just a step beyond putting a wood veneer over fiberglass purely for aesthetics, of which I am guilty.

At least that's real wood, even though it does say 'I'm a glutton for punishment."

What's the backstory?
That is a fiberglass bench on a new Sportfisherman build.

She is an artist specializing in names and details on big fishing yachts. This piece, the faux teak bench, is all hand done, brushes only, and free hand.

Here's a screenshot of her pinstriping a boat name she's painted. Shame I can't post the vid (Instagram), it's impressive to watch her work.

We're at the beginning of a 24-hour severe cold snap here on the coast. Sort of fun for us as we're prepared. I rarely get to wear my 'real winter' clothes here on the coast with a warmer climate.

But a combination of a polar vortex and a stiff NW wind will give us a taste of inland frigid.

We'll flirt with an ambient of -20F just before sunrise giving us a wind chill in the mid -40Fs.

The real challenge will be in places like lonely Jackman Maine. They could feel -60F. That's tree trunk splitting cold.

I'm tempted by the potential for some stunning sea smoke photos tomorrow morning,...but not sure I'll walk down to the harbor and take them.

It's all over by Sunday when we'll be back in the 40Fs.

Drove through Jackman last summer. Pretty country. My impression of Jackman-ites is that they will just settle in with their wood stoves, whiskey, or weed until its warm enough to venture out again...

I just remember the trees, endless trees. A little behind the times these days, it's time will come. :)

Just got back from a trip on the work boat. Was 20 when I left the dock, 7 when I got back. Could watch the sea smoke building up. And the ice… Windshield wipers were rapidly losing effectiveness by the end. Fortunately the rest of the boat is made for it with heated decks and all, but yikes! Kinda sporty out there now

Crossed the sheepscot twice and the kennebec in the afternoon. More ice than I would have thought in the kennebec, but the sheepscot at the swing bridge looking north looked good with the sea smoke. Wind was strong though so it wasn’t as impressive as it could have been
