I've had good luck painting out that old formica. Sand it thoroughly with the RO, use a good tie coat primer, and any final finish you want. The good thing is that it gives a perfectly smooth base to work with. No grain to fill.

Fresh paint can do miracles.

You can finally inhale in this area of the boy's boat. Neither of their girlfriends (that they live with) would go near the head. :)

They would like to get a dry toilet (not in the budget yet) but have a cover/compost/bucket and lid.

Many of these kids (I find) aren't as squeamish as their parents about new methods with waste.

Why were two light fixtures needed in the head? Pearson or PO?

Speaking of paint and smell, is there any secret to ridding or at least reducing the odor of bilge paint once it's been applied? I haven't had this done yet (going to get a local painter who works for a boatbuilder to do it with proper gear), but don't want to ruin the summer season with paint odor below decks. Maybe it's just something to be done at the end of the summer...

Acrylic enamel gives off less fumes. But once dry neither oil or acrylic should linger, much.

If you want it done right, do it yourself?
Then I’m running a marina, not sailing, and I already have a business I run.

Steve White and I tried to figure out a way for BBY to manage it, couldn’t make it work.

It’s prep school dress code rebellion. Plus her name is Muffy supposedly…
Muffy Aldrich. Old money RI name. Abby Aldrich married John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The Aldrich mansion is a familiar sight on upper Narragansett Bay, and was the setting for the giant party scene in Meet Joe Black. My mom was one of the partiers.

Not sure if this has been posted, but Buck’s Harbor Marina on Penobscot Bay/Eggemoggin reach is for sale and has announced they won’t open this summer. I looked at buying the operation but could not find anyone to run it.
Oof, that’s a blow. I actually know someone who wants nothing more than to run a marina, and in the summers pretty much does run the one I’m in. Only issue is she’s 17. Super driven, though, and one day would make a most excellent marina manager (despite all of us kidding her that the way to make a million dollars owning a marina is to start with two…)

How about we get Maine Coastal Heritage Trust to buy it, maintain a dinghy dock for public access and pull all the Bucks Harbor Marine moorings and turn the space into an anchorage and water access for all? :) They could tear down everything except the outdoor showers, and clean them for us.

I heard of a family dispute in the round pond area that is forcing a small mooring field/marina to close for the summer. Anyone heard anything about this? I know it’s not padebco

I can’t say much because I went to the extent of doing due diligence on the deal and signed an NDA, but turning it into strictly a resource for recreational boaters is, IMO, a bad idea. There are local lobstermen who land their catch there and the fuel dock, laundry, fresh water hose and trash service are resources for locals and cruisers alike. The moorings hold far, far more boats in the same space and there is still a lot of room in there for folks who want to anchor.

One of the tensions, going back to when Lois and Jerry owned it, has been that people would pull up to the front dock and fill up with water and dump their trash, go anchor, come in and tie up to the already crowded dinghy dock, use the showers and laundry, and not buy fuel or anything in the retail shop. In other words, freeload shamelessly off nice people.

I’m still considering an offer, but lack of a local operator with ties to the area is a big hurdle.

Bucks Harbor. Had to take another look to see what else is around. That’s a hell of a trip to get two little girls ice cream, even if one did just lose a tooth…

Don’t hold your breathe @Cruisin Loser but I’ve asked a couple people if they know anyone

I did emoji my sarcasm. :)

But I don't see a good solution. We were there the night of that storm and were given a mooring in the east cove. The guy was really nice and tried to accommodate lots of boats.

They were hooking up moorings connected to who knows what below.

It looks like the typical tough marine business: Make all your $$ in a few months and then try to pay all the bills for the year and then have enough $$ left over to invest in better mooring tackle.

It's a difficult business equation being located on a piece of ledge with little to no usable land around to grow. But I hope you find an operator.

No but it was reported on the Maine sailing/cruising group that the market (King Mo Market) will be closed this season. There may be a connection?

Also reported for anyone transiting Western Penobscot Bay en route to the Fox Island Thoroughfare: The marker on Drunkards Ledge is gone.

The current around there can pull you toward Drunkard Ledge much faster than you expect.

I see Restive on her mooring in Center Harbor. Are you up here yet?

I don’t need it to make money, I have other businesses for that. I need it to not lose money. It’s a great little spot, and it would be a loss for both commercial and recreational interests to have some rich guy just turn it into a private dock.
