I don't get out much anymore, but there are times when I just have to push myself and get out of the house.

We have a little restaurant in town that would gain notice in any big city anywhere. The place can only seat 18 people and reservations are usually necessary. Once a month, Aneta, the Polish chef and co owner with her long time boyfriend, designs a tasting menu that is always wonderful. A starter, 5 courses and dessert. The portions are small by design and the food is wonderful. Last night it was Japanese inspired.

My wife's grandson is 15 and he has his first real girlfriend also 15. I told my wife that it was time that Antek started to learn about good food and I told her to invite Antek and his young lady friend, my treat.

The food was marvelous and a good time was had by all. Grandma even said the kids could have some wine with their dinner.
The total for dinner for 4, a pre dinner gin and tonic, several glasses of wine and after dinner coffee, tax and a generous tip came out to a little over $250. Gotta love Polish prices.

Worked outside all day yesterday, 20deg and blowing, came home and wife was coming down with something. Needed some comfort food.

She made a quick butternut squash soup, I made grilled cheese sandwiches with sharp cheddar, gruyere and a little pastrami. Used both mayo and butter for a nice crispy brown crust.

Very comforting.

My daughter was furious with me yesterday morning. I talked her off the ledge and dropped her off at school with a prolonged hug and decided to get milk and fruit at the store… which turned into a bit more.

Made a slow-cooker chili: 4lbs ground beef, three chopped onions, lots of chopped garlic, three chopped bell peppers, more paprika and chili powder than I thought necessary (tho my wife added more later 😂) Rosemary and thyme, basil leaves, chocolate powder, Worcestershire Sauce, chicken broth diced tomatoes, jalapeños, kidney,l beans, black beans, chick peas…

Took a nap, ate some and then went in for call. Another Tupperware for dinner.

Yum.

I also bought some Angus steak I’ll sous vide tonight, with potatoes and cauliflower.

It's garlic scape season. Yay!

Last night - garlic scapes, bacon and soy sauce.

Chop 3 slices bacon and cook in a large pan. When nearly done, add ½lb scapes, cut into 2" pieces. Cook 3 or 4 minutes, then heat off and stir in a tablespoon soy sauce. Serve at once. Mmm...!

EDIT: Snags, you and I think alike.

A well-received side dish at a potluck party yesterday. Cheesy asparagus with bacon.

Preheat oven to 400°F.
Cook 6 slices chopped bacon.
Trim 1 lb asparagus, put in an oven dish, drizzle w/ 2 tbsp olive oil, S&P, 4 cloves minced garlic on top.
Bake, uncovered, 10 minutes.
Sprinkle ½ cup shredded Gruyère (or Parmesan), add bacon pieces.
Top with ½ cup shredded Gruyère.
Bake 10 more minutes.

Yesterday I made a fresh fig balsamic glaze. A neighbor gave us 10 figs. They made about 6 ounces of glaze. So today I grabbed a couple chicken thighs and breasts bone in skin on. Planning to bake the chicken with the glaze and lemon slices. I’ll finish it under the broiler for just a few minutes to caramelize the glaze and serve with a sprinkle of gorgonzola and walnut pieces.

Will advise…..

(grabbed a nice salmon steak for the rest of the glaze on Monday)
