Formula Fifteens

Can any body in oz give me any info on the skiff class called Formula Fifteens? Are they competitive interclass Eg do they sail to their yardstick rating ?? Do they have a weak wind range? Are the older boats still as competitive against the new boats? Any info would be helpful .

I've sailed one, as I know the boat builder and he leant us a promo one to try out. I enjoyed it, however, they do require a bit of weight and strength and I had a bit of trouble because of this.

Not sure about a weak wind range, I don't think so though - I sailed one in 15-20 knots and there were no problems with the boat (just with me and my abilities, lol).

The class is only fairly new, and therefore the 'older' boats would most likely be still competative. The guy who builds them always builds good, strong, fast boats, so the hulls should last a while.

Follow the website that smc gave you and click on the 'association contacts' link. The guy who is the secretary is also the boat builder, so he will be able to answer any technical questions. I also know the president and he has sailed the class since it first started so he will also be able to answer any questions that you might have.

The one I tried was single trap, so I can't comment on the twin traps. Reckon that'd be fun though! The builder is pretty friendly and is always keen to promote the class so I'm sure you'd be more than welcome to pop in.

hey cherub sailor, i sent him a pm, (just realized your talking about me when you say the president) are you vicky? sorry if i outed your secret sailing anarchy identity, how have you been?

Weve been two wires for almost two years now, so you must have just missed out when we had the boat up there.

Hi Nick, yes, this is Vicky, don't worry about the secret identity. I'm good, having our first season sailing a Cherub in Brisbane. Still plan to get back into the 125 occasionally for States and stuff. Congrats on your Nationals win by the way!

Yeh, I think they were just getting into the twin wires when we test sailed the Formula 15 but that particular boat didn't have them.

cool say hi to grant for me. all the boats are now 2 strings.
what's the advantage of a F15 over I14, Jav, Cherub, 49er, 29er etc

I like the look of the boat and wouldn't mind getting into it but the class seems to be very similar to some already well established classes and I'm wondering if we need another one.

49ers arnt a good port phillip boat (ive heard). i14s javs are a lot more expensive. especially the i14s... cherubs and 29ers arnt really the same target audience...

Nick all is well mate raced on Sunday (2 Races) took the gun as expected didnt beat those pesky herons on H/Cap Flew the kite on the reach the boat just took off!!! trouble is the course is short so as soon as its up and set its near time to gybe. Second race wind piped in Josh out on trap and me swinging my ass over the gunnel got to the wing mark and stuffed the gybe SPLAT in the drink. next leg down wind did the same. Found the boat easy to right easy to board once righted.Had a few people looking over the boat all were very impressed with the shape and style. Got good feed back on the the speed on the water the cat boys sat up and took notice. Give us a season and we may be up to speed. Any body thats interested in the Formula Fifteen l say its a must to try then buy !!!! Very kind going to windward if you get into trouble and allow it to learn gets to a point and allows you to recover as we found out a few times. The turn of speed off the wind is a blast very light on the tiller, with the open transom the water is gone there is no bailing. One super skiff lets get more on the water. Also think we are going to call the boat TOXIC.

Hey guys,

If anyone is interested in giving the formula 15 a go this may be your prime opportunity.

I am travelling overseas and selling my boat "Redback" sailnumber 08.

The boat was built at Formula Sailcraft in 2005 and is in excellent condition, and comes with with following:

  • Brand new carbon foils in an Irwin bag
  • Black anodised mast and boom
  • Registered trailer
  • Irwin sails in Irwin bag
  • Aluminium troller with large pneumatic tyres
With a new set of sails this boat would be as good as a brand new one except without the $23,000 pricetage.

There is no way to describe the way the boat sails so I suggest you call me on 0407 333 478 to arrange a sail.

All offers welcome!

Cheers

Justin
