Forum Software: Navigating Threads, New Features, Feature Requests

Errr....a couple of dumb questions....
  • why are certain members ages published?
  • who the fuck came up with 'well known member"? Sounds phallic. Or some sort of nancyboy politically correct forum speak; and
  • why waste screen real estate on when a member joined? If I really want to know I could go to their profile, I don't need to see it every fucking post.
Somebody wants a cookie cutter approach to their forums. Must be much easier to have the same template when flogging space to advertisers. The reason I like Anarchy is nothing about this place resembles a mainstream cookie cutter forum. Make it like look any more like CF and I'm throwing the biggest tanty.

'Well known member'. FFS. How positively quaint. Cucumber sandwich anyone?
Well Shaggy Tanty, how do you think the "mid range" members feel? Neither large nor small, just middle of the range?

I like seeing how long somebody has been a member. Its actually more useful than how many posts they have posted.
If somebody has posted 5,000 posts in 2 years, you at least know you are dealing with someone with forum diarrhea. If someone has posted 500 posts in 10 years then they are more likely to have collected their thoughts before posting.
If someone has been posting for 10 years they are less likely to be a recently created sock puppet , and even if it is a sock puppet , it has earned a certain kudos for being maintained that long!

So I vote for keeping the year that the poster joined.

Would be fun if we could delete other peoples' old posts.

In a way, that was possible on the old forum. The ability to delete an entire thread that you started, no matter how old or how many people had contributed to it, wiped out thousands of other peoples' posts. That's too much power to destroy content that was often carefully considered and useful. I saw it happen several times. It was not good!

Why did the member join date disappear? It was on the left of the screen in landscape on mobile, but now it's gone.

Because people bitched about it. On a desktop browser, you can see it by hovering the mouse over the avatar image.

How do you hide signature lines?

Used to be able to message someone by hovering over their avatar - now it seems you have to start a message and key in their I.D.

Bring back the old way please.

Somehow the layout seems more cluttered.
I don't know exactly how, but its a pain to read.
I think its because each topic is narrower, more compressed vertically, and there is less white space between topics. also the headings themselves are perhaps too small (look like a 'verdana' font). stretched wide so also perhaps not as easily read.

when you read a page of text, there is a certain amount of white space between the rows or it becomes unreadable. that's what the layout of this forum now suffers from. it is not easy to quickly scan the topics to find the ones that hold interest - because its difficult to isolate the individual topics.

the irony, of course, is that far less topics are shown on a single page (far too few imo). so saving vertical space, at the expense of usability, would seem a poor tradeoff.

(edit: There is a subtle button in the bottom left corner of the page that says 'Change width'. seems to work!)

The new owners have been impressively responsive to feedback. The 'Start Conversation' button is visible to me.

please reset the threads so they are 100 posts per page.
This does not bother me so much now that they have the "jump to latest unread post" functionality working. However, it does seem like a huge usability problem that so few topics are presented on the forum page itself. I had to click 5 times just to find a topic that was posted one week ago.

There are sailors I'm sure who only get onto this forum once or twice a week - but they aren't likely to click five times (through a difficult to read list of topics) just to find the topic that interested them. More topics per page please!

(edit: use button at the top right of the page that allows you to set the number of posts per page!)
