that's depressing, but it tracks with my experience throughout latin america. Macho is a disease.

Things are at least moving in the right direction here, so there is hope.

Lots of good role models on daily life. Like on the police force.

This was in the town adjoined to mine: a lone policewoman, still dressed as a princess, leaving a school where she had just performed a theater play for young children, teaching about traffic safety and traffic laws. She sees a robbery right in front of her, on the sidewalk. She, alone, unarmed and still dressed as a princess, arrests the bandit - and someone manages to take this fantastic picture:

The photo and story made it to the local and national news, very entertaining of course, but I'm sure it also made some positive impact on the minds of our children, girls and boys.

And our heroic princess cop got her well-deserved 15 minutes.

We have also elected a woman president. And impeached her.

He’s simply stating that the guy’s intentions were clear and she should have mentioned that wasn’t on the table before taking him up on a very expensive offer. Anyone with a functioning brain would know what he was looking for.

This was the original post:

"They apparently exchanged numbers and he offered to fly her from LAX to Athens to go on a sailing vacation. A couple of words at the airport and *BOOM* Bimbo On Board."

Maybe his intentions were clear to him and he thought inviting somebody to go with him on a sailing trip must automatically include sex.

Maybe she thought she was being invited on a boat ride with a rich somebody and if she liked him, things might happen, but that was all.

I've invited female friends to go for an all-expenses-paid evening daysail with sushi and wine included. Somehow my expectations were to go sailing and not have sex* and we have had a few nice sails. (*hadn't cleared it with my wife first)

What's the difference other than the money he spent for the trip between me and him?

The amount of money? The fact they were relative strangers?

I would also like to see gender adjusted data. In the same way that there are risks to the female crew, I think there is an element of risk that is unique to the woman skipper/boat owner sailing long distance on her own , trying to asses the wisdom of taking on board those seemingly nice man at the dock who offered to crew in exchange for a ride to Mykonos.
Nah :D

Possibly. Keep in mind that the weirdo guy did nothing wrong in this story. When things didn’t work out as he’d hoped, he bailed. He actually did the right thing. I’m just saying you’d have to be dumb as a box of rocks to misread that offer.
Or she was simply a smart cookie taking a pig for a ride.
She knew there were others on board to protect her and got a very nice holiday out of it with the best birth.

Good for her though, it's not something I'd recommend risking. :D

Not smart at all. As we have seen, women are often sexually assaulted in these scenarios. If she was smart she would have politely declined and went on with her life. Thankfully the guy didn't cross the line. It could have ended badly for her. She took advantage and got lucky. Many women are not so lucky.

Good point. But both Ipec and Instituto Patrícia Galvão are serious organizations, with a solid history, I have no reason to doubt that this is a serious and scientifically sound study.

Brazil is a very sexist country, there is no doubt about that. I don't see anything surprising in this study.

I take the bus regularly, always have, here in my city of Florianopolis, population 500,000. We are one of the best cities to live in Brazil, according to many polls and rankings for quality of life, quality of public services, health, safety/violence, low unemployment, and high income, for Brazil.

Every few weeks I see on the local news about another man caught by the police grabbing or exposing himself to women inside a bus. Sometimes it is outright assault on women, like the two young and cute lesbians recently punched and kicked by a man shouting homophobic insults - they dared to ask him to turn off the loud music. This happened downtown, in the middle of the day, and they had to seek medical help, one of them had a broken finger.

Other than that, Uber does not have a good reputation with women here in my city, I know many who feel uncomfortable or are afraid to take an Uber. We have had some Uber drivers here who have raped female passengers.

Not to mention the tragedy of femicides. In my own idyllic city it is a disgrace, every few months a story so tragic and violent that you are torn between painful sorrow and simmering rage. Usually perpetrated by ex-partners.

Yeah, that photo and the backstory always kind of creeped me out.
Didn't even bother to translate it. Could have done without the 'filtered' face.

Just trouble. no matter which way you look at it.

This is some random dude in an airport the girl in question had never seen before in her life and never would see again if she hadn't decided to go with him. There was no power dynamic here. Also nothing bad happened to her, the dude looked so stupid with his non-date date he just left :ROFLMAO:

That's exactly what went down.

Money creates subjective power differential. Somebody pays your plane fare, provides room and board, sailing...same as "what I paid for dinner and a show and I don't get a goodnight kiss?!"

Here's an example of god's-honest FB crew posting that's not gonna attract many millennial responses:

Aged Pirate crew available... Smoker ...
Retired delivery skipper, 30 plus years sailing, old school, looking to crew for free...
Florida to pref. San Blas, Panama, Colombia, but wherever. Pref. min 3 months.
I started a journey but unfortunately the boat broke down and will be laid up for months. My own boat is laid up so I'm looking for another ride. Available immediately, Florida to wherever. PM if of interest. Thanks!

That old guy looks like he could be of use on a boat run by some of these YouTube couples. Maybe he is just too upfront...

This might get more attention from the cool kids these days!
