The most egalitarian and diverse gathering of learning sailors nowadays is at the community sailing centers. Learn there first. Then it’ll be easier to handle the not-quite-right predatory types if you ever have that misfortune.

And yeah I’m likely prejudiced, I teach at one part-time.

The same reason you would not say that when asking a woman on a date. Sexual interest is implied. The woman is agreeing to give you a chance to court her and even to attempt to seduce her. She may really like you or she may not. If not then you had a nice dinner. Some assholes really do believe they are “owed” if they buy a woman dinner. These guys eventually take up sailing and post ads for female crew.

I'm from a "violent country" in darkest africa and don't feel the need to take it that far. But we don't have a gun culture and most houses won't even have weapons beyond a breadknife in them.

Women in SA are twice as likely to be raped as US women, who are already quite likely to experience rape or sexual assault in their lifetime. I feel like I would be abdicating my responsibilities as a father if I didn't give my daughter the tools to fight back. Self-defense is a right.

The article wasn’t my point. And for sure there are far bigger issues with male skippers/female crew than make skipper/male crew simply based on population and societal tendencies, but gay predators are definitely a thing too. I’ve also seen female skipper/female crew issues as well. Some people are just creeps, and worse.

Oh it's probably way worse than that, that's just the official figures. Don't think we're not aware of it and oblivious to the dangers, but guns and (bows and arrows) is quite a violent form of self defence (from my standpoint).
