Yes, 75 years ago.
And you and she were probably from a reasonably homogenous social group. Shit has changed.

This is true too, rightly or wrongly - a bit of both in most cases - and it can make navigating different situations easier or more difficult depending on how well you have figured out what has changed and what hasn't given a particular circumstance / potential partner.

Wrong. I am pointing out that 'unspoken rules' and 'unwritten laws' are a fantasy generally concocted by people with power in order to exert such power over others. The reason we don't use social norms for legal purposes is because they differ from household to household, neighborhood to neighborhood, town to town, city to city, state to state, etc.
There's a pretty simple solution to all of this;

Don't be an asshole.

This one from today (Sailboat Hitchhikers and Crew Connection FB) shows our little tart demonstrating her amazing halyard skills. I can imagine several situations onboard where these talents will be most useful.

And then there's the wholesome family seeking free passage to anywhere...but career, mortgage and bills. Bet the young one is fun to party with after long day. Of course, they don't believe in disposable diapers, so the 5 gallon bucket will need do between land falls.

This group of millennials consider time on the floaties to be equal to 1000 mile passage on the North Atlantic in winter. Who would have guessed this group would come so well prepped for passage?

I have never used (S)crewbay, crewfinder or any other site to find crew. I did meet my ex wife on Match.com so I have met at least one woman over the internet.

From what I have seen is that this is a completely unregulated world where naive young women can easily fall prey to dirty old men. But its not the only place. All through the Canaries in November to spring are hundreds of young men and women looking to hitch a ride west. Once in the Caribbean its the same looking for a ride further. Conversely there are lots of boats looking for extra crew who are not too crazy and know a enough to be good help.

I have absolutely no confidence that these web sites have any value what so ever. Why does anyone think that something as important as meshing personalities, skills and safety in such close quarters can be done with a simple app?

Introductions, maybe. But no one is getting near my boat until we have a few long conversations over a beer or more.

This. If you want crew, your ad is crew wanted, not girls wanted.
I would further add that being one of 4 or 5 people on a boat is WAY different than being one of two. Also in the normal course of things, you would probably want to sail with them locally for a bit and them you before taking off across an ocean.
Or at the very least root them a couple of times before you leave. She may have bad tits or be a dud fuck.

I wonder if this guy actually finds what he’s requesting. I can’t imagine a young woman doing this. A 20 year old finding this dude attractive seems unlikely…or she’s stupid and naive.

Yeah he sounded not that bad until the under 21 part. What so he doesn't have to ask for the wine list at dinner? Oh wait, does Chipotle have a wine list?

Guys,
Look in the mirror. Do any us sense even a bit of irony in this topic being discussed on SA? Do we even have any female posters any more? We have run most if not all, off,
or lost them for lack of interest.

The most egalitarian and diverse gathering of learning sailors nowadays is at the community sailing centers. Learn there first. Then it’ll be easier to handle the not-quite-right predatory types if you ever have that misfortune.

And yeah I’m likely prejudiced, I teach at one part-time.

There are quite a few women here - the ratio seems to be similar to the real sailing world.

By that I mean women who actually sail, not just go along for the ride.

I’m with KIS on this. He isn’t implying she was obligated to put out. He’s simply stating that the guy’s intentions were clear and she should have mentioned that wasn’t on the table before taking him up on a very expensive offer. Anyone with a functioning brain would know what he was looking for. Apparently the mercenary in question accepted that things didn’t play out the way he’d hoped and did nothing wrong. I don’t give a shit about your legal nonsense because no laws were broken.
