Fu-c-( San Francisco bay!! I need to get my boat OUT!!

Actually, the town of Pittsburg is kinda rough. It's getting better, there are a couple of nice restaurants, but it's still sort of 'working class industrial'. And it's a looong sail to the main bay.

Look around at guest slips; many marinas have them, including a couple in Sausalito. For someone anchoring out, the $20 or $30 they will charge may be worthwhile once a week for showers, water, pumpout, etc.

Definitely check out the anchorage in Richardson bay before you decide to move there -many of the long term residents are kind of sketchy. Once when anchored there, I watch one of them paddle slowly out to their boat, passing very close to every boat on the way, looking in to see what was there, 'casing the joint'. Plus, it can get kind of rolly due to the ferry and other traffic. Plus it's open to weather in one direction; not the prevalent one, but storms can come from anywhere.

Check out 'Activecaptain.com' - there's lots of good info, including phone numbers for all the marinas.

So,.. Two and a half years ago I bought a 1977 Peterson 34 sloop. I found her in San Francisco bay, after hunting the entire coastal US for months.

At the time I thought, "What a great place to learn this boat, and to live while I do it" (not that I'm a big SF fan, but I love the outdoors and a protected bay).

Little did I know at that time,..The legal Live Aboard issue in the bay!! Of course my seller didn't say anything either! (I'm from Boulder Colorado by the way). I bought the boat, chasing my dream! I'm still motivated to do this too.

I learned to sail on 505s just to live this dream. Lots of fun and action galore! I was crew, so I hung off the trapeze. After that, it makes sense I'd buy an old racing yacht too, don't you think??

Anyway.

After two and a half years, I've put HUGE money into upgrades such as a composting head, New wet exhaust, a stove, fixed all of the deck holes and painted and installed a Garmin 741xs GPS. I have three lewmar ST55s waiting to be installed. I even bought a tender, and an outboard.

Yet still after all this time. Who even knows how many calls to marinas. Applications to get live aboard slips,.. (dam near begging for a place). I'm still getting a cold shoulder. treated like a criminal for even asking... I of course PAY out the nose for California "luxury" tax.

I didn't buy this boat to take $6000 vacations on it (and working the entire time). I bought it to fix her up, and make her my tiny traveling home.

She really needs new standing rigging. It looks fine, but it was last inspected in 1986, while sitting in Napa marina (where it stayed for another 24 years).

ANYWAY,...

I need to go live on the boat. SF bay will not allow me to live there, no matter how hard I try, it's always a NO GO!!

SO,.. I'm thinking about sailing this old danger trap up to Seattle mid summer. Where they look forward to me taking a slip! Jobs pay more then Colorado to start, then I make now!

The question is,.. should I risk my life because California SUCKS ASS???

So in the morning, I'm calling to find out which slip..

Might be a fixed issue!!

Take the slip, don't push the live aboard issue until they do? Way better than anchoring out.

That ^ and if the boat was one of the many sitting dry docked in Alameda. Make sure it floats before you sign for the slip.

It's in the water.

I would like to haul her for new bottom paint soon though.
Liveaboard DIY yard be your dream sounds like, something Bay Area doesn't do...
Sound like you've kinda had it in the Bay Area IMO sell the boat off and go to Colorado where you make better money...revisit the liveaboard idea later...

(I was like that, tired of Cali a few yrs ago I was even doing winters in Hawaii/summers in wash state and was still unhappy so I went to Florida and acquired a boat/cruised around and got schooled about all things Florida...)

Shameless Hussy nailed it ...

If your slip offer doesn't work, what about leaving the West Coast? Haul her to Houston for about $5k, then do your bottom paint, mast and rigging, probably a lot of tech jobs there, and Texans seem pretty laid back. Sail her through the Gulf and then up to Virginia ... plenty of work for Tech, plenty of friendly SAers, and little stress with living aboard.

Yeah, us Coloradoans tend to go West, the East can seem a little insular compared to what we're used to, but East Coast really has a great quality of life if you give it a chance.

My friend was Coast Guard on the West Coast, didn't like it much, was much happier when he was sent to Charleston.

I think everyone should move to the East coast. Trust me, you'll like it. I know we will. Bye :)

Since you have a tender, simply anchor out in Richardson Bay. Easy commute to SF and plenty of public transportation.
This is looking like my plan actually! I'm trying to figure out where to leave the dinghy during the day, and my Truck at night!
Richardson Bay anchor outs are an endangered species, junior. Research is obviously not your strong suit:

"Sausalito police plan to begin enforcing a 35-year-old law that prohibits vessels from anchoring in city waters for more than 10 hours -- a move that could result in removing people who live on their boats.

The action comes as several municipalities in Southern Marin, and a regional agency that oversees Richardson Bay, grapple with a community of "anchor outs" who live on their vessels and who have a long history on the bay. There are also derelict and garbage-filled boats that can present navigation and environmental hazards."
