Also this conversation has gone in circles enough that I called up Greg Ketterman, co owner of Hobie and inventor of the Mirage Drive and asked him if he thought aux propulsion and adjustable sail area are essential as per your theory. In his estimation, they are not, as evidenced by the expansive amount of market activity centered around products that feature neither. -THAT is attitude.
Seems like Greg's attitude, and your (Dave) unacknowledged attitude, are very much winning attitudes. :)

Dave, thanks for teaching us so much about the whole domain of small boats. I’m curious about the rig and sail development. Please expound when ez.

I am wondering if this could be used as a car toppable EC boat?  Curious what the maximum recomended payload is and whether the sail can be modified to reef?

Clarks, I must say that you have drawn and built a very handsome small boat. A couple of them would be great to have and zoom around on during the Summer.

I hope some of these Rockets end up at resorts.

It's been my experience that many resorts that used to have Sunfishes to play with only have Hobies nowadays.

I'm just a humble pot farmer with little sailing experience, but a few years ago I bought UFO hull #11 based on a Youtube video of Dave and Steve presenting and explaining the design to some group of sailors.  I had a blast on that UFO for a few years but just sold it last summer.  Sold it because I end up sailing in very light winds often, and because I couldn't take my wife or girlfriend out sailing.

I ended up with an old Raider sailing dinghy.  Easy to rig, 10 minutes trailer to water, big enough for one of the ladies to come along, enough sail area to move along in light winds.  But you're not paddling that oddly shaped hull very easily if the wind dies.

Today I'm checking out Hobie sailing kayaks because they might add some flexibility and fit an upcoming need.  The local dealer up in Northern Michigan only sells a few boats, and his website lists this thing called the 'Rocket'.  'Hmmm, what's that?', so I click on the link.

Dammit Dave I love this idea.  Again.

Any video of the rowing setup for non-facebook people?

BWAHAHA! Resistance is futile! If it's any consolation, you wouldn't be the first UFO owner to also buy a Rocket.

Here's the brief rowing demo I put up on facebook earlier. She's very versatile

I thought Panbo started covering paint mixers when I first saw it.  But for someone who thinks they need aux propulsion that doesn't require physical labor in a dinghy, I think this may be the easiest solution.

For the sake of us all please don't bring up anything Hobie "Sailing" Kayak related.
Oh noes these ideas that scare you so much should never, ever be brought up.

The scare quotes around "sailing" really show the terror of a kayak that is actually a highly capable small sailboat.   Cause this video ain't sailing to Catalina....or IS it?

More time spent rigging and some modest performance gains. Buy the base model and try a different rig if you ever get bored. The boat in its base configuration is a total scream.

People are asking the wrong question. Does the Rocket rig fit on the UFO?
