Garmin GNX 120 with B&G H5000?

If I use a garmin GNX 120 with a B&G H5000 system - can I feed the garmin calculated data for true wind (speed/ angle/ direction) from H5000 or will the garmin display try and make it’s own calculations? What about AWA, speed, headings and so on - will garmin read “raw” data or with H5000 calibrations applied? I would trust my H5000 to do a better job, but can garmin read the “pre calculated” data using all calibrations etc. from H5000?

The GNX120 will put out whatever you want from the N2K bus. If you are feeding the H5000 directly with analogue xducer inputs it should only be putting out calibrated numbers on the N2K bus. If you have a "bitsa" system with other random xducers talking on the N2K bus you'll need to be more careful selecting the right sources per channel on the GNX120.

Perfect thank you! I'm feeding H5000 analogue wind and speed, but there is also alot of sensors on the N2K bus, GPS/ Heading/ Heel & trim/ Rudder ref etc. but if I understand you correct, selecting the H5000 processor as the  source in Garmin for all values should keep the Garmin from recalculating the numbers?   (Displaying TWA directly from H5000 with it's "advanced motion correction" and ignoring AWA/BSP/Leeway ....)

Yes. I have found that Garmin sometimes ships the GNX120s with outdated firmware which can make the N2K source selection a little buggy. This can be fixed with their network updater thing and an SD card.

Hmm - the manual for Garmin GNX is not very detailed, I do not have a garmin plotter, do you think I can plug the SD into my vulcan B&G plotter, or do you think I need to get the Garmin network updater cable/ card reader?

I would be very surprised if you can use a B&G plotter to update the Garmin displays. The Garmin network updater works well - but you can check the firmware version on the devices when they arrive so you will know whether you need to do anything or not.

@fsiljelof, We are running H5000 and GNX120 in the boat I sail in. I totally agree that GNX120 documentation is not the best, and that they ship outdated.

In our setup, we use the H5000 as a processor. In the Data Sources in H5 we select the source we want to use (for the anenometer might be obvious, but for GPS you may have more than one antenna).

Then, you can select in the GNX the source for each Data field, you will be able to select the source as well, so make sure you are selecting the source from the H5000.

Notice also that for some data fields in GNX you might be able to increase damping. Make sure that you have that configured the way you like it.

I hope this info is useful, and let me know how it works! I want to further see how to integrate these two, i.e how GNX custom data works (and if they are compatible with H5 remote channels), so if you know anything about this, let me know (i created another thread:

 )

All the best and happy sailing!
Santi
