GGR 2022

Anyone here going over for the prologue race, Gij'on Spain to the start in Les Sables d'Olonne France? double handed with possibility of a media passenger. Will be traveling on the 4th, that race starts on 8-14 will have a few weeks to help on any needed prep and race to France. We will be on the docks in Gijon if in the area.

Best Regards

Jealous - post pics! I messed up my timing and was in Les Sables a couple weeks ago for the mini SAS race prologue. Saw a few of the GGR boats and ads all over the place, but nothing had been set up yet!

Surprised there isn’t more activity in this thread - or more general interest in the race on the site in general.

Is there something I’m missing in reading the room here…?

See that the GGR has their own forum as well. Only done a cursory skim but am guessing there’s prob some interesting chat amongst the skippers.

Didn't know they had a forum - I'll give it a look. As for this one - dunno. Guess we've had months to think about the entries but not much new til they start?

Even so, this place usually has more bantering, wagering, and armchair shit-talking about these kind of things than the mean girls cafeteria table the week before Prom. All I hear about GGR current events is crickets chirping…🤔

Here. Why don’t I start things off…?

Intelligent discussion
The Rustler 36 is the bona fide boat to beat. Discuss.

Idle gossip
Place your bets on who’s the next sorry soul to drop out.

Pure shit-talking slander
Don McIntyre is a mean old grump (or so his pics say - even RKJ smiles from time to time).

Have at it.

I'll see your Rustler 36 and raise you a Tashiba 36 or perhaps a Nicholson 32. Based on absolutely no experience and only the most naive reading of some stats from Sailboat data I put together here! Admit I'm not clear why the Rustler's are so popular - build quality, perhaps? Saw somewhere where Don was complaining about having so many. If everyone's signing up for them, must be something there. Though Guy DeBoer seems ecstatic with his Tashiba after his transatlantic - updates now and then through Bob on the Robert Perry fan club FB site.

Next drop out - I can't find the article now, but I thought I saw one or two who were still on the wrong side of the Atlantic???

And actually, as a side note, found this Facebook page discussing the GGR that seems fairly active: https://www.facebook.com/groups/455424994866570

The Tashiba is definitely a solid boat. Feels like it’s made of ferro and very smooth on the water. I can see how it’s confidence inspiring and a horse for this course. Saw one of the competitors had replaced the skylight with a solar panel. Super tiny cockpit, though it felt like it put you a bit high up, however. Massive cockpit lockers. You can crawl right in and do some spelunking down there.

That Gaia 36 of Tapio’s sure is a pretty girl.

Still not a ton of chatter and sort of confusing. Not all on one page, but if you look for the #ggr2022 tag, it should bring up the various posts that are scattered across all of the entrants' accounts, the GGR main account, and other sailing related groups.

Be easier if everyone would just join SA :)

And it was Gaurav Shinde I was worried about. Dislocated his shoulder and going to miss the Prologue. Haven't seen if he's been able to start. The other late start was the young American guy, Elliott Smith, but I gather he's at least left the US and is on his way!

GS dropped out en route to NYC. Made it as far as Newburgh, on Hudson. GGR hasn’t updated yet.

Elliot is one I’m really interested in watching, actually. He seems to be a poster boy for “new school” sailors embracing the old school vibe. And he’s very marketable, so if he does at all well he likely has opportunities to look forward to. 💸

Ah too bad about Gaurav. Gotta be tough. Agree with the take on Elliot - and he'll need it as one of his recent posts said he was down to $75 in his bank account!

Well as long as his boat is already provisioned. I’m guessing he has an audience and the social media skills to rustle up some scratch.

Then again, $75 buys a lot of rice. And one last pack of cigarettes and bottle of wine.

Well turned-out 2022-2023 poster.
Best of luck to all, they will need it.

Based on that it looks like Smith is in. Had a look at his marketing. Very astute. And very smart move positioning himself as the young, free spirit “seeker.” Really sets him apart from everyone else listing their accomplishments and validations why they deserve to be there. He just removes that whole question and doesn’t have to answer for it.

“Race? Nah, man. I’m just a dude, searching for my truth.“

Yes, of course you are. Crazy like a fox.

Good Morning,
I've just arrived in Gigon to assist a friend with his final prep. I took a walk to the marina last night and saw Minnehaha, Puffin, Lazy Otter and Nuri down there.
Hopefully I can keep the thread going with pics leading up to start day.
Regards.

How cool is this? Feet on the ground for live reporting! 🤠

I‘m jealous. It must be great to be there in person. And the event and skippers seem very accessible.

Looking forward to your reports.

You wouldn’t happen to be someone’s campaign manager, would you?
