If you can't get out of the way, you get overrun. Seems to be a recurring feature.

That was a huge ugly system coming at him the whole way. He had stated that he intends to continue around the globe despite being told he'll be ejected from the official GGR after passing the Hobart gate, due to their January 31 deadline for that gate... I wonder of he'll stick to that plan after losing that gear. His boat must be pretty well squared away if the rig and comms are staying intact in those conditions.

Those Tradewinds are built like the proverbial out house so I'm not surprised the boat & rig survived. As for continuing into the Pacific SO without a liferaft  Maybe divert to Hobart regardless and pick one up.

Okay, so he was doing 5 knots trailing warps, understandable. Sad that this cost him the race, must rue the day he chose the Hydrovane, although if seems the wave was serious enough perhaps any windvane would have been destroyed.
Do we know the wave that knocked him down destroyed the Hydrovane?

Could be just as easily that the HV just failed for whatever reason and that caused the boat to broach and get knocked down?

He was asleep, so he doesn't know either?

Ouch... Bagshaw couldn't fetch the Bounty Islants, which apparently they are required to leave to starboard, so he had to tack onto starboard tack in 30+ kts... I hope he gets a windshift soon so that he can resume sailing in the correct direction.

Another example of racecourse requirements written in a dry office back home that perhaps were meant to improve safety, but in fact add constraints that can be detrimental to safety. i'm sure he'd rather be eastbound on a reach, and then get some northing in later when the wind isn't blowing from the north.
did you his text messages:

zero viz, 30+NE wind & big NE sea. Have to pause here until I can take sights so I can safely leave Bounty Isl to starboard (1/2)

(2/) or I could be making good progress East & leave the island to port. dumb waypoint obliging unsafe sailing in my opinion.

I don't blame him

Anyone have an idea where Simon is heading for repairs? There doesn't seem to be very many places in that part of the world when you search for "welder" or "ship yard".

On the plus side we've got a drag race to the finish!

(Unless Abilash and Kirsten both suffer the fate that's befallen 75% of the fleet so far)

Quiz. A good friend sent me this today (you have to zoom in) with the question of "can you guess" ? I wracked my brain but had to give up, just a random packet of bits right ?

So the answer is ... parts to fix Simon's mainsail sliders. Simon's daughter had ordered them and they needed collecting before onward shipping

Probably. I don't think these things are strong enough to handle all the steering loads. A servo system on the main rudder suffers much lower loads.

Does the GGR have SI?
But hey, they got a NOR...

2.5.2 Course Penalties
Any Entrants, involved with any collision with any vessel at any time after the earliest start time, regardless of who caused that collision, will each be fined EURO$500 (paid to SNSM) and must continue sailing. Entrants are responsible for making their own repairs and no time recourse will be considered. Sailing on the wrong side of a mark of the course will incur a three-day time penalty unless the mark is rounded again. For each hour the boat is south of a declared southern latitude boundary, a three-hour time penalty will be applied. An entrant missing the Hobart Gate is disqualified from the Race.
Time penalties allocated to an Entrant will be served in a Penalty Box (TBA in the sailing instructions) On crossing north of 20 degrees North latitude, the Entrant suffering a time penalty must then return south of that latitude (Penalty time starts) and not cross North of it again (within 40 miles of the crossing longitude), until the time penalty has been served. The entrant may then make for the finish line.
Amendments to the Race course regarding safety measures to avoid drifting ice and/or a minimum distance of the course from the coast of some countries in the southern hemisphere will be published no later than the 30th JULY 2022. These amendments may be updated based on studies carried out for weather or ice conditions or consultation with Rescue Coordination Centres.

Roughly 90 minutes within the forbidden box.
The rules are well written. Could be a 3h, could be a 6h penalty.
To be taken somewhere(tm) that will be defined in a non-existing document. Or maybe the next sentences. Or maybe superseded in that document if it actually exists...

Both Kirsten and Abhilash have gybed north - looks like Don has learned at least from the last round not to "tell" them what to do, just to give "suggestions" and to couch it in lots of ass covering language.

🇬🇧
WEATHER ALERT: ON the 7th FEB at approx. 1200UTC a large intense low will pass over Abhilash and Kerstin and blow for approx. 48hrs. They have been advised with a suggestion that they do not go below 49Degrees South which "may" lessen the impact, and keep them from the fast changing wind direction centre. The system is so large they cannot hide from it. Windy video shows wind, not gusts and is suggesting up to 10mtr seas and Gust over 60Kts. In the next 40hours it will evolve and may change? #GGR2022
