Smart money isn't wasted on wagers in contests dominated by so many unknown variables. Enjoy the spectacle of this race, but don't bet yer house on it like Crowhurst.
True. But Simon is, I believe, the most experienced *racer* out there (and has the benefit of a cleaned bottom in Chile and a bit of a “rest” there), while Abhilash has the experience of a solo circumnavigation already. Kirsten, while strong, doesn’t have either of their experience, I don’t think. (That said, she may be very hungry to win.)

All that said, indeed, who knows…too many variables with folks still south of the Equator…

Well, I don't read too much into experience on this route and racing experience. Elite racer François Gabart, starting at 29 years old, had not raced around the world when he finished first in the 2012-13 Vendee. Ellen MacArthur was 24 years old in her first Vendee, when finishing after collision with a sunken container in 2001. With Simon at 62 years and Kirsten 39, these aren't elite youngsters.

So these are nothing like Vendee sailors, of course, and the boats are those we pedestrians (and I) have sailed. There are so few solo circumnavigators, you have to take what what you can get. I sailed with a one time youngest solo circumnavigator who told me you in sailing you need millions of dollars, not like most other sports - basket ball, soccer, foot ball, running, etc, - which recognize talent and training. It is a bespoke world here.

Meanwhile, as weather predicted, Kirsten extends again. Doldrums will shake out again soon.

probably posted way earlier in the thread but worth another watch even if you have seen it

I'm not so sure of that, while she might not have a circumnavigation she has been a delivery skipper for 15+ years so could probably have more sea miles.

She set out to win, who knows what they know of each other's positions?!

I am surprised Kirsten is not moving west, both to "cover" Tomi, and because the Atlantic doldrums is generally less extensive the further west you go, plus you pick up a following current right at the corner of Brazil.

Kirsten has more ocean miles than any of the other competitors. Her weakness is her understanding and use of the weather. That said she has done many deliveries up the Atlantic but her performance in terms of weather tactics and strategy down the Atlantic wasn't great.

Simon will sail a shorter course at the same speeds. Baring breakages etc. He will be first IMO. But; he can't win the GGR because he stopped for outside assistance therefore it is between Kirsten and Alibash at the moment with two others behind to pick up any pieces.

Obviously she doesn't know where he is, said on the latest weekly call that he seems to be on radio silence.

that is brave of ian, not that he has a lot of choices now but to hunker down

could kirsten get lucky and keep the lead? she is at least still moving for now

and simon seems clearly will pass both leaders soon
