I have listened in to the call much more recently than "weeks" and there are broadcasts from Argentina, Brazil, and earlier from the Falklands that she knows about.

Stop with the Don's bullshit about 200 year old guide books. Ocean Passages is still published. I have the 1973 edition, as that was the last one that came with a chart folder, and the data has always been kept up to date. Assuming she has that one then her book is 50 years old and only fine detailed knowledge has changed in that time.

I've got the 1973 3rd edition as well, and as a strategy for navigating these waters absent detailed weather prediction data, it's a great approach. It's prolly best characterized as "a concise compendium of 300+yrs of the Admiralty's navigation experience" than as being "200 years old"... Climate change may reverse the direction of the Gulf Stream one of these days, but that day has not yet come.

But if you actually listen to the radio call from a few days ago you can hear first hand from the actual sailor that she didn't have any weather information at all.

No assumptions here.. I have heard some of the radio calls. And the Wx is broadcast for all to hear from stations more or less local to her. The GMDSS weather.. as the Guardian Angel likes to call it .. is not very useful and could be considered "no weather". So yea no weather routing although the Guardian sails pretty dammed close to the wind with the definition of weather routing sometimes.

She gets that every day. There are several sources on HF for that area so I imagine she is well up to date with the maritime broadcasts; Ol passage guardian isn't as import as he thinks he is since they approached Chile. Except that they probably like the chat; which will be good for moral. There isn't much of use in the broadcasts for navigating (sailing) through the doldrums though.

I'm really not sure why this is so complicated. This is what he started with, and it seems very much not the case. Maybe there's a language barrier, because "so I imagine" is very much an "assumption". This assumption well debunked by the weekly radio call.

I'm just saying don't make assumptions yourself, what Kirstin says on the weekly satellite call is what she wishes to tell Don, theres all sorts of explanations why that might not line up with what other people have heard on radio calls in the area.

For example it could be that she had no HF/SSB reception, or her HF/SSB isn't working very well so although weather is broadast she could reasonably be able to not hear weather others in the area can.

It could be she was using a collequialism expressing frustration at lack of details or she could still just be angry at Don (after all Kirstin was frequently updating the weekly text update as just "text").

Simon has done very well through the doldrums compared to Kirsten and Abhilash. As some commentators have said in other races (Vendee and Jules Verne), Simon didn't have doldrums at all, kept moving the entire way. While the aphorism "west is best" may apply, it didn't work out for Abhilash. I was surprised on Kirsten's audio that she thought being further east was needed.

The speeds of the boats may be modestly different, including Simon's clean hull and skills, but I'd be surprised if wind speed didn't make the most difference in the last 7 days. I've only crossed once personally, not racing but neither motoring, and am surprised how fast Simon got north. In any event, all are moving well now, cheers to the first three making it through!

Zero miles in high latitudes, if that is a requirement to understand what someone says on a radio call then I concede that. I find it a massive leap of imagination to think that competitors are being cryptic with race office here, but guess that it's not impossible.

they are all moving and it's nicely poised over the weekend! I think simon in the middle might get the best of both worlds and could well be the one who ends ahead as they all come together.

in his latest call he laughed when don asked him about the race. he said he's not in a race anymore but just wants to get home now. probably less taxing mentally in the doldrums

I think Simon like VDH before him, is sailing a master-class and to be honest i will be surprised if he is not first home.
Would be good to see Kirsten get it, but don't think it is going to happen, unfortunately.

Tomy clearly in the lead having kept west, still a long way to go though. Really don't understand why Kirsten persisted in the east when she had lots of opportunity to get west.
