I'd rather die that way than at my desk at work.
What’s a “desk at work”? Are they dangerous?

That was pretty much the first criterion we wrote down for our backcountry climbing trips.chance of rescue, 0%
There's some company called "30 seconds Out" that sells motivational patches and stickers that say "No one is coming" and "Expect to self rescue."That was pretty much the first criterion we wrote down for our backcountry climbing trips.Second on the list was "No means of asking for help." You get out under your own power or not at all.
That's not some macho pose, either. It's an ethical choice made by people who understand their activities are outside mainstream social conduct. If you crash your car, you expect EMTs -- because almost everyone drives cars on public roads and we pay our taxes dammit. If you slog 22 miles into some lost cirque and launch blindly up a 1000 foot rock face ... no one owes you anything. I believe that mindset both heightens the wilderness experience and sharpens focus. Many a time, my partner & I discussed our next move in the light of our isolation. "If we try this mad traverse, the only way off is up. A fall here means two broken legs, best case, and a long crawl to the car. Do we go, or bail?" Often, we bailed. I'm not the least bit ashamed of that.
Then you are a smart lemming. Even if you carry an EPIRB, it's good practice to act like you don't.There's some company called "30 seconds Out" that sells motivational patches and stickers that say "No one is coming" and "Expect to self rescue."
I'm a lemming, I bought a couple to sew onto my foulies.
Never in my life have I filmed anything, but occasionally had people onboard that did some filming. You see some very small snipbits here: https://www.youtube.com/@BagheeraSailing@Bagheera Can you please point me to your YT channel?
Glacier Bay is about 100 miles from where I live. It takes an overnight to sail there. Outside the 3 tourist months you don't need permits and you can roam everywhere you want. In the summer some parts of the fjord system are blocked off.Years ago, a summer, in Glacier Bay, we met a few guys who thought they may have been the first to winter over in a small boat there. Dunno. Tried to keep in touch to ask them a bit about logistics.
Did you require national park permission? (as is basically required to visit other times of the year, I.e., their booking system to manage visitor numbers)
As an aside, I spent some time up on the glacier at the head of Reid Inlet, never realizing the grizzly hazard ashore. Very naive! They frequently walk the beaches foraging for food. I was lucky. Winter much safer (from that point of view anyway). Tarr Inlet head also a good location for a floating base camp for a ski/climb ascent attempt on Mt. Fairweather.
Wintering is a big word.
Me too! My backcountry motto (sea kayaking/sailing in remote places/taking our RX-7 up very remote logging roads) was:Often, we bailed. I'm not the least bit ashamed of that.
The mountains will still be there. We go home, get better, then maybe return for another try. Or leave it for stronger climbers to make the FA. (There's an 80% chance Fred Beckey ticked it in 1985 anyhow.)Me too! My backcountry motto (sea kayaking/sailing in remote places/taking our RX-7 up very remote logging roads) was:
"He who lives and runs away, lives to run another day".
He holds the dubious honour of, like the utterly crazy founder of Scientology L. Ron Hubbard being the most published author of all time (schlock dime-store, penny-a-word pulp science fiction novels from which he developed the themes of his “religion”) of, of course, having the most first ascents. The mountains will still be there. I thought this was a thread about thread drift....(like Seinfeld was, famously, a show about...nothing...Awright, awright, take it to Cascade Climbers. This is a thread about girls in hot places.
(CC was a hell of a forum back in the day...is it still online?)
It is. Drift onI thought was a thread about thread drift....
don't bother then.Never in my life have I filmed anything, but occasionally had people onboard that did some filming. You see some very small snipbits here: https://www.youtube.com/@BagheeraSailing
We have started working on the coolest sailing project ever and are potentially interested in sharing this on YT, though I'd need to hire somebody for the filming and the editing. I suck at that and I don't have the time for it. No girls in thongs in warm places though...
You thought wrong!!I thought this was a thread about thread drift....(like Seinfeld was, famously, a show about...nothing...)
For god’s sake, do I have to do everything for you?don't bother then.
