We’re more sub than dreadnought, but yeah. :). I think we can do it, but return would quite possibly be solo. (To Vancouver is rather farther and more north than California.) Anyway, Christian is a geezer with plenty of experience. I’m still trapped in the interminable boat refit/money-gathering phase of life, at least I’ve convinced myself of that :)

The real thing is every job takes so much time. Took me fully three months basically daily late last spring/summer to repair/restore my deck, an unexpected/unplanned project that I realized was fairly in dire need of doing - three months that I couldn’t devote to many other things. But as I start this year I sorta feel like I could be ready to do it next summer. Meanwhile, geezer Christian has gained experience on me :)

Who was the person above annoyed about thread drift here? Well, that gruelling deck refit interlude was big Hawaii voyage planning drift....
Never let a good job get in the way of your sailing adventure.

Ain’t that the truth. Blowing a nice cold 20 something here. Was gonna go out for a sail, but I’m still putting the head back together after the Great Toilet Replacement Project of 2022. Hangover to 2023. Lots of fiddly bits of trim that I had to rip off earlier that need to be replaced all over the place since I had to dismantle cabinetry to do toilet project (and also replace two through hull valves).

But then I was like, damn, if I cut open that cabinet behind the head (where the old Jabsco head hoses ran), which has no access inside it, I can build in some more storage...so I sucked myself into that! Think it’s called “might as well-ism”. :) Well, it’s part of a long-term program to make things in general more functional on board. Toilet paper, etc. storage - not mission critical stuff, but winter project bullshit...

Back to our regularly scheduled program...whatever the hell that is...

There is no such thing as too much storage on a boat, except for the "build it, and they will fill it" aspect.

On a weight-sensitive boat, storage is a lure for the unwary.

Storage in the ends of the boat is particularly hazardous.

Just dipped in because I watched the Delos series of transiting the Panama Canal. All I can say is B. F. D.

Going up and down the Columbia, the FIRST lock is the almost the same height as the ENTIRE Panama system. (The second and third locks are HIGHER.) No crew of ten, no Line handlers, no advisors. Just you and the dog. (And no fees. The river was here first. Bridges and dams add shit have to let you through at YOUR convenience.)

Radio the lock master 30 minutes ahead. Lasso that floating bollard on the midship cleat. Secure fore and aft lines. Sometimes the wind is pushing you into that slot like a slug in a shotgun. Hope you have good fenders. Keep pushing off the side because sometimes the spreaders knock on the walls and sometimes floating crap gets stuck in the bollard wheels and you have the cry out to the lockmaster.

Doors open. Light turns green. Cast off the lines and you’re good to go.
I think the crucial difference you are missing is that if you have a mishap on the Columbia river you don't cause a significant disruption to global trade, Ever Given style.

I was stunned when I found out that the middle-of-road ladies on there are making close to six figures per month. I don't get it. I read an article in Wired Magazine about it and was gobsmacked. Shit, I would shake my ass for the camera for that kind of dosh.
someone here pointed out that Nicole and Jake from 'living off grid' have a straightup OnlyFans porn channel

The guy who said "I think she really likes me" at the strip club has moved on-line to get duped without leaving home. Just like stripping/porn........ the money will stop but the damage is forever.

Amazing to think that 25 years into this technology this is where we’re at. Paying to see pics of feet and all manner of sick shit on onlyfans. I might live for another 25 yrs if things don't go awry and can only imagine where we’ll be by then. The only thing I am sure of is Jud will still be working on that boat.

Well, FKT did promise me use of his machine shop, so I gotta get down there to work on it some more...ah, geez, the problems I have could definitely be solved with money (if I trusted folks to do the work...)

About two weeks after the first motion picture was made, someone was filming a woman hoisting her petticoats. Same for early photography: the real money was in dirty postcards. Prolly J. Gutenberg was shaking a handful of filthy woodcuts produced using his new press and shouting, "I only wanted to make ze Bibles!" If he wasn't printing feckenbildern himself as a side hustle. Same customer base for both.

While we are on the subject of Endless Refits (as the 70's America's cup boat Endless Summer was known by local wags when it was Maple Bay BC in 1980), here is more evidence that Kiana Weltzien is the real deal:

To summarize, starting in 2018, Kiana sailed her 41' Wharram around 11,000nm, then spent 430 or so days rebuilding it, and has since put another 10,000nm on it. She's currently in Brasil and as of today is anchored up next to our friends Anastazi Racing. She's crossed the Atlantic four times, three times solo. I'm just really impressed that she was able to get the repairs done on such a large and old boat and a reasonably timely manner, given it turned out the rot was, unsurprisingly, much more extensive than expected, and it seems she did the work mostly solo. She does have a Patreon, and it looks like she's blogging there, so you get something for your bucks, but it's impressive overall.

Yeah, the real deal (y) For all the shxt that Wharram sailors get sometimes, there's actually a bunch of them out there just getting on with things and achieving quite a lot.
