Shakedowns are a way of life in Egypt. The canal pilots and their buddies are real experts. They used to want cigarettes, now it's cigarettes and money.

It's nothing personal--just part of ordinary business.

One American who went through the Suez Canal at the same time we did refused to pay baksheesh on principle. He was rammed hard by the pilot launch for his audacity.

Most of us just considered it as another cost of cruising.

However, when we finally got rid of the pilot and turned into the Med, it was with a huge sigh of relief.

Interesting. No hint of that going through the Panama Canal.

All I could see were the dreadlocks. If he ever posts a video of a skinny white guy with dreadlocks, I actually will complain to the management about false advertising.

We've met a number of you tubers. They've all been nice. Some we have had aboard for cocktails and apps. They do spend quite a bit of time editing and creating product.

In the short time we’ve be cruising we’ve met two. One we watched - same personalities as on screen and one we never heard of. Also nice. We helped when the second caught a huge log in their anchor chain. I’d like to say it was out of the kindness of our hearts, but really I was worried they would hit us. Their “about us” starts off with “We have little experience but have sailed 10k miles…”. I see….

Yeah, but she’s leaning on the skinny dreadlocks guy with the cheesy cap’n’s hat, a wet comic book, as LB15 nicely put it. He and his cheesy grin are hard to escape. Newbies clicking on the first post in the thread could easily be mislead into thinking that this sort of thing is acceptable (he’s got pierced nips too, if you dare to zoom in - lower lip too, I think) - or even think that’s the way cruising sailors should appear.

Seems a bit rich to have his own thread. However, you may be right that that should become a safe space for big bearded men. I doubt it’ll get many posts, but segregating it there should help keep the peace here. And besides, Cap’n Zatara would be flattered (and he seems to like adulation and attention) to have his own thread.

So, in sum, you’re saying no bearded bloke vids here (but Dylan may beg to differ and, as ‘eminence grise’ here, I cede to his authority).

Dreadlocked white guys verboten, too, although mockworthy? I don’t know if anyone has come out in their favour (Sloop opposed that right from the start on page 1 of this thread), and they certainly don’t deserve their own thread.

When I was about 6, a grizzled old ex-Navy neighbor showed my buddies and me a big nasty lesion on his arm. He had recently had his Navy tattoo removed. "Don't ever get one of these, boys" he said. It was kind of a shocking moment which stuck with me.
Fine for others, just not for me.

The American writer PJ O'Rourke observed, and this isn't an exact quote, "the weirder or more interesting you are, the more normal you have to appear. If I meet a young person with four nose piercings I realize I am dealing with someone deeply ordinary." I read this in an obituary for him, which I unfortunately cannot find now, though there were several in major papers. But it very much articulates the feeling I've had about tattoos and piercings for a long time.
