I just think to many people today seem to give a dam about my opinion. Then they act holy or victimized and want to tell the world. I've got my opinion, you have yours, they are like assholes everyone has one.

Regarding the recent kerfuffle. I do like women, and I think Nikki Wynn is very good looking, and charming in many ways. Including how she rocks a bikini and shows it off on YouTube. Jason on the other hand lost my interest when he kept replacing failed things aboard their boat that he told us were the best thing to buy/do a year before. Way to much technology to maintain at sea.

Actually it's more despairing for my kids.
Don't despair. In my experience the younger generations are just fine. I find far less tolerance for differing ideas among grumpy old folks.

I just had dinner hosted by a bunch of twenty somethings. It was one of the most interesting nights I have had in a while filled with humor, fascinating conversation and great food. They were all polite, listened to each other, and actually considered each other's positions on various subjects. They even sent me home with a book they liked. Those young men aren't poor communicators or intolerant.

Another anecdote. I loaned my Sunfish to a 17 or 18 year old kid to race last weekend. He gave me a hand written note thanking me!

Times change, norms change. Women can vote. You can't smoke on a plane. Some terms that seemed funny go out of vogue. That doesn't mean the younger generations have lost their sense of humor.

Like any cross section of society, a lot of people aren't worth a shit, but the young folks certainly have their share of smart, considerate, thoughtful, hard working people.

I do a lot of yacht deliveries with young people as crew. In general they are better informed, more open minded and less judgemental than people my age. One young man once told me that his generation were just waiting for guys my age to die so that they could fix the terrible mess we had made of the world. I found it very difficult to disagree with his viewpoint.

I know so many young people and across the board they are; less racist, less sexist and misogynistic, and less homophobic than their parents. Is anyone surprised by this?

More interesting to me will be how other traits of their generational culture will pan out. For instance, their view of work in the scheme of life. They are setting new priorities that seem to be taking hold. They will change things, just like we did.

Just waiting for us to die. We'll isn't that just sweet of them. As they wait they may become us.

You guys are talking anecdotally about younger people being good folks and that’s not really what I was talking about. Yes, my kids in their twenties and their friends seem like squared away young adults. But I also see in many of them the statistics that are out there- Fewer people finding mates, having love interests…more reported loneliness…higher depression and anxiety…etc. These are trends. Maybe a good percentage of the issues are explained by humanity’s focus on the internet as a central means of communication. But I don’t think I’m wrong that our generation and our parents’ was generally more satisfied with life at that age. And I think the stats support that.

I had just gone on to YouTube to look for a video on how to splice a Flemish eye. And this shit was top of the page. Ugh. Go for it. Flemish eye splice. Looks like a long and hard on the boat splice.

Maybe a good percentage could be due to being young when the planet is serving notice that it will become uninhabitable in some areas in their lifetimes. That could get me down.

The thing that annoys me most is that the splicing vid shows how to do the splice with a whipping stitch to finish it - and I want to know how to do it without that stitch, as I’ve seen it done elsewhere in real life…can’t find a vid.
Well, at least you were able to finish to granny vids. Here's a Kleenex.

jud, most of the Flemish instructions I know use a very very short bury (like 2" or so), intentionally because the aim is to put a nice finish on the end using the least amount of line. Those short bury's need some extra security to hold the loop (in case the line gets snagged or something), which will generally be a whipping or some sewing. If you don't like whippings, you can just put a few lock stitches in (just by hand is fine or if you have a sewing machine put on two zigzag 'bar tacks' generally looks nice and usually stronger). You could make the flemish eye secure by itself, without whipping or sewing, by making a longer tighter more secure bury, but that would make it hard to do and use more line and sort of defeat the intent.

Yeah. BUT, they are going to find out that fixing it is harder than it seems, and that in many cases, the dinosaurs are NOT part of the problem. It is the nature of youth to think that the existing system is stupid and built by idiots and can be easily improved with fresh thinking. But it is the lament of old age to realize that human problems are remarkably persistent throughout history.

Do you have the source of those stats?

Most of my friends are late 20s early 30s, as am I. All married, or long term partners, most have kids... all really happy, fulfilled people.

The point about anxiety/depression may be valid, may also be that younger people are more open to talking about it. When I was a teenager no one dared speak about their feelings, not so much anymore, which isn't a bad thing. I've also recently deleted or severely reduced my time on social media, and I definitely feel better for it.

these generational debates always remind me of this month python sketch.
