Well, if they do, it will cause a small problem for the Van Isle 360 to find a new stop-over, but all in all it would be a great gain for the salmon.   That is, if we can also reverse the trend of destroying native salmon habitat.  Maybe the Canadians can do it.  Until we change the sheets in the White House, there's not much hope for the US.

Which stop on the Van Isle 360?

No doubt that protecting habitat throughout BC and Puget Sound is key to protecting salmon. It's a challenge with the human population exploding as it is, and the competing pressure for hydro electric to provide low carbon power. The salmon need the priority before it's too late. This is a technical challenge that should be doable for one of the richest, smartest, and concerned regions of the world.

The number of lice on those farmed fish is astonishing and an obvious bio hazard as huge plumes of baby lice disseminate with the tides from the farms.

However, the sight of the Canada Coast Guard boat coming along side the Martin Sheen as it passed through Seymour narrows without any radio contact was a sign the government has no intention of closing salmon farms. That was a silly move.

Can Canada, will Canada, close these farms?
One can hope. If you look up Alexandra Morton youll find a ton of info. The First Nations bands up by Port Mcneill and her actually won a courtcase, so now the fish need to be screened for diseases before being put in the ocean. i doubt its enforced though, the DFO has only been obstructing the investigation of PRV. They actually claimed a couple years ago that theres no need to study the virus because theres no evidence its causing harm. Well of course they didnt have evidence because they refused to look into it. So thats the Canadian government for ya. Big businesses' little bitch. But dont you dare flush your head in the ocean. What a joke.

I do know a few people working for the fish farms, nice folks, but when it comes to their job they just stop "believing" in science.  The evil hippy lady and the First Nations conspiring against the poor little do-good fishfarm industry, funded by chinese or US interests, depending on who you talk to. Lol.

Im not gonna miss the farms, theyre noisy and ugly and plug up a lot of good anchorages

Norwegian parent companies in some cases.

Yeah, I wouldn't be unhappy to see them gone. The sea lice that kill the wild salmon is a real thing.

DFO's mission from their web page. They are really about promotion of fisheries, not about protecting wild fish.

I've got a relative that works in a hatchery in a senior position. That was her take on her dept. anyway.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is the federal lead for safeguarding our waters and managing Canada's fisheries, oceans and freshwater resources. We support economic growth in the marine and fisheries sectors, and innovation in areas such as aquaculture and biotechnology. We help ensure healthy and sustainable aquatic ecosystems through habitat protection and sound science.

In that video, and others, you can see the discarded netting lying on the bottom. Wouldn't that be a violation of perhaps several regulations from fishing to polluting? Spraying literally tons of medicated cat food into the water not withstanding.

I would assume the fish farms in the Puget Sound are creating the same problems. I guess the First Nations angle for forcing an examination of them is not an option.

Oh, and can you imaging working a freekin fish farm and having Pamela Anderson pop in off her big Irwin to say "Hi, what the fuck are you doing with these disgusting fish"?

Hardwicke Island.  Between Campbell River and Telegraph Cove there aren't very many places that can hold 40 race boats.  Actually, none.

The race has rafted up on a fish farm on that leg for years.  They were always good hosts, but this year the regs got very tight.  They handed us a dinner to eat on the boat, but no access to the warehouse for dining or camping.  Frankly, the fish they produced was getting a little tastier compared to 20 years ago, but a long way from the real thing.

As I understand it, the Washington State fish farms are on a short regulatory leash.  Too many of them have broken up in the past and accidentally released a jillion Atlantic salmon.

That sounds like a cool stopover. If they close that farm, you might have to teach those racer dudes how to anchor a big sled LS. :)

Well, it was, if you like being double or triple rafted to a network of creaking steel grates, listening to the automatic fish pellet sprayers all night long, usually in a windy drizzle, with a couple of porta-potties with a 10 person line in the morning.

Yeah, anchoring....The only anchoring up there is using a dinghy to get a shore tie to a tree.  Like that is gonna happen!

No, it was warm, she's wearing a sun dress and looks quite fit. Not surprising given she's a retired life guard. The "cold place" is a reference to the hot place thread.
