How 'bout them Owls. Absolutely amazing.

When I graduated 48 years ago it was a Jr/Sr school for Miami Dade, Broward & Palm Beach Community colleges. Our sports were diving for lobster off the beach and hitting Ft Liquordale.

Saturday night was the first time I ever rang the bell in the backyard for a FAU victory.

Hopefully they can out do Indiana State where I did the 1st 2 years and win the championship.

Our mascot is not the fierce looking owl on the logo. Rather it is the cute little Burrowing Owl.

Tried to find some tenacious predatory traits of the burrowing owl, but other than lining their nest with manure to attract dung beetles (brilliant), I found this which does have a basketball flavor to it...

"To catch prey, burroughing owls use their long legs to walk or run across the ground. However, they’ll sometimes hover the ground looking for prey and catch insects in the air."

Since NC State lost int he first round, I have been cheering on all the underdogs. Definitely rooting for the Burrowing Owls!

Since the dream of finally winning it all and in Houston ended when Hurricane season came early for UH I am back to always rooting for the underdogs - the game against Memphis was awesome. Go Owls. At UH a cheer is Whose House? Coogs House. For FAU it could just be Whooos House.

I kept yelling from my couch in St Petersburg for FAU to take a @#$ T.O. and regroup, but NO-O-O-O they wouldn't listen to me!!

Congrats to SDS, they played well.

It was a tough last minute. SDS kept their composure. The Owls showed their inexperience and lack of institutional tradition. The Owls have never in any sport reached this level. SDS was 63 years old when FAU was founded and have only been playing for about 25 years.

And those Mud Lizards better keep their claws off our coach.

FAU also competes in human powered submarine races.

FAU’S HUMAN POWERED SUBMARINE TEAM TO COMPETE IN EUROPEAN RACES​

Florida Atlantic University’s Human Powered Submarine (HPS) team will be travelling to England in July 2022 to take part in the European International Submarine Races (EISR). The HPS members will compete against teams from various universities around the world in the 11-day event, in competitions that will test various characteristics of the teams’ submarines, including speed and maneuverability. Such international races were pioneered by FAU in 1989, and the university’s team has competed regularly in the races ever since, gathering several prizes and speed records along the way.
A Human Powered Submarine is ordinarily comprised of a main hull, various control surfaces, and complex internal mechanical systems, which are all operated manually by a ‘pilot’ pedaling onboard. All these systems are designed and built primarily from scratch by the students, with guidance and support provided by technical staff and faculty in the Ocean and Mechanical Engineering Department at FAU.
The club members are also actively engaged in fundraising activities with private benefactors and prominent defense-related companies, which provides essential support for the team’s participation in the races. For attending the 2022 EISR event, the students were able to raise the necessary funds through generous donations by the Link Foundation ($10,000 raised), and by Dr. David J. S. Nicholson ($15,000 raised) who is the Chairman and Founder of the Stiles-Nicholson Foundation.
