There are some crazy quotes from Ken Ivory in the article. He says without any irony that the good passages in the Bible should overshadow the bad. Where was this argument with all the other books that have been banned?

Where do the dildos come in? The "please rape my daughter concubine instead of these guys" episode in Judges 19, really is kind of shocking.

Pretty much everything in the Old Testament is authoritarianism, racist violence, and grievance. With a little bit of incest porn stirred in, to make it interesting without lessening support for the patriarchy.

That pretty much echoes the thought processes and activities of the religious nutjobs (aka 'priests') that wrote it all way back when.

It should be pointed out that the bible isn't the only religious screed that features loads of rumpy-pumpy, both normal and highly aberrant. Of course, they all have lots of killing, smiting and burning.

Way back in pre-christian times, various Greek and Viking gods were known to appear to humans, shortly prior to fucking them.

Ancient Hindu gods seemed to favor acrobatic fucking, to the point of risking extreme spinal injury. And yes, they too sometimes went slumming and fucked mortals.

Mohammed consummated his marriage to Aisha (no.2 wife out of 11) when she was 9 or 10 years old. (He was 55 at the time.)

Buddhism seems to be the only belief system free of reckless bonking and mass murder.

Buddhism is the only one of your list that isn't a religion, it's more some suggestions on how to be happy, you could argue with historical cites for the others being tools of control for ruling powe
That's bullshit, Buddhism has a pantheon full of gods and goddesses such as the goddess of mercy, Kannon/Guanyin, who is also believed by many to be an avatar of Mary and/or the Hindu goddess Avalokiesvara. Guanyin also made a brief appearance as the Goddess of Democracy in Tiananmen Square. Furthermore, Buddhism has hell-Naraka, and heaven-Sagga.

Buddhism most definitely is used for state power, and as a rationale to oppress Muslims and Christians in Burma and Thailand. The Buddhist political party Komeito is part of the ruling coalition in Japan, and that coalition is rapidly abandoning pacifism. This is not to crap on Buddhism, just to say it's not an exception to usual problems with religion. I know; Buddhists who build statues of their goddesses, or rape and murder Muslims because they are not Buddhists, or vote in the Diet for F35s, are not "real Buddhists"-but that's just the "no true Scotsman" fallacy.

Budhism depends on location.
Japan: funeral industry and philosophy, though perhaps still religious to some? I get the impression it’s more an undertaker job than a lifestyle lecturer. Maybe it also resembles some Protestant churches. The preacher lives a normal life with family, doing weddings on Saturday, working Sunday and Christmas but taking the rest of the week off. I’m told with Budhism there is no sermon to prepare for at the temple, no family counseling when junior gets arrested, unlike the Christian preacher. I think the temple is less sacred than the Sumo dohyo.

Vietnam: religion with ritual. Definitely this has devoted followers and community.

Thailand: Oppressive religion, or so I understand, but no first hand experience.

The mainstream Buddhist denominations in Japan do well from funerals, and from going to homes to say sutras at family alters. The evangelical Buddhist denominations such as Sokka Gakkai, expect their members to come to weekly meetings, and to try to get new converts. Of course, Sokka Gakkai members are expected to always vote for Komeito. Orlando Bloom, Tina Turner and Herbie Hancock are Sokka Gakkai members. A sumo dohyo is the purview of Shintoism-Buddhism doesn't do sacred dirt.

Good post.
The "pantheon of gods" came ~1000 years after I think.
That someone would use Buddhism as a reason to hate is I think not a reflection of the message, just someone suffering and creating more suffering.

My thoughts of the difference lie in the direction that Christianity was perhaps altered at any early stage from the original message to one that created a control structure rooted in fear.

I say perhaps due to the vagaries of people trying to translate an ancient text like the Gnostic Gospels from Coptic. If you believe the translations then early Christianity was quite Buddhist in flavour...
