No halter, mate, it's a tube. A tube top w/o a string to hold it up. Brown pointers for all.

Great idea. Let's see what can be done!

Boathouse and Maxluff-I think you have to do it to be able to bitch
Done it at least 10 times so I can bitch all I want....some high(low)lights:

12 years old sailed on Concordia 35 Diablo to class B win finishing late MONDAY night (for non locals this race starts on a Saturday and should finish early Sunday)

Crewed on an Ericison 35 when I was about 14 that had a jammed spinn halyard so they send the young light guy up to cut it down and the fucking boat broaches then the wind dies and we motor home

1991 decided to race my Hunter 30T (it was a short lived cruising faze) and it blows 45-50 knots we make it to first bell outside of Hussey Sound and the Genoa rips in half..Only 8 boats finish that year after the wind dies...

1996 raced our "dealer demo" Mumm 30 in class A and beat all boats around Monhegan Island reaching with Assym at 18+ knots (a highlight) then the battery died in the hand held GPS the only Nav instrument aboard except the uncalibrated compass and we get lost and finish after most B boats late Sunday morning.

2003 raced our J-105 in class B, hit a whale 6 miles before Monhegan around midnight doing 9 knots. Stopped dead in the water with loud "soft" thump all on board needed to change underwear (except drunken dunkin who was passed out) then headed toward shore (after sailing through a pod of angry whales) because altitude lou the weatherman send it would blow, it blew alright, it sucked no wind, sat for three hours doing zero, fired up the engine and motored 6 hours home....

Maybe next year in the FT10M???

Well after doing the damn 'Slowhegen' at least a dozen times it became apparent that doing that race on anything less than LOA 50' is not a good idea...
A brief on a 30ft Frers "Commotion" written for non-racers just after the race, and not edited for this posting. Fun just the same:

At our start, we were pushed over the line 2 seconds early and had to circle the Committee Boat and restart to hear the “all-clear” signal. This set us back a bit, as we were now in the thick of the 15 boats in our starting class with bad air off all of the sails ahead. So we footed it to leeward and some clear air, beating our way out of Hussey Sound. Of course, the tide was coming in against us, so we tried to stay out of the deep parts of the sound and make some time on the leaders.

Once open to the Atlantic we encountered 4-6 foot rollers as we settled down to the beat to the first mark the “LNB” (old location of a Lightship) about 8 miles offshore. On this leg, Go-dog-go (J-29) started making time on us as well as Snowbird (NY36) and Fianna (Baltic 38DP). The two Olson 30’s Thumper and Roach Coach were just to windward and pacing us with the balance of the fleet behind us. As the wind continued to build, we reduced to our No. 2 headsail bringing the boat more upright and gaining several tenths of boat speed. A the LNB we all made left-hand turns and popped the ‘chute for a drag race to the Monhegan turning mark. Here the Olson’s hull shape took over and they screamed at 7-8.5 kts making headway on us, catching Go-dog-go and Snowbird. Meanwhile, Symmetry a Cal 33 sailed by Winton Scott with whom I did my first Monhegan, became our pace ship all the way to the next turning mark, 14M Monhegan.

This 30nm leg had pretty consistent wind speed with 25 degree wind shifts. We were able to keep Symmetry in check, gain a little on Go-dog-go, but the Olson twins just screamed ahead. Roach Coach was making the bests of the shifts, passing Go-dog-go and beating them to Monhegan by 5nm. We completely lost sight of Fianna and back aft of us we could see some of the larger boats, but no real threats.

By 16:00 we started on snacks of scallops wrapped in bacon, shrimp cocktail and crab dip on pita, washed down with a couple of beers. Then we decided it would be easer to light the Barbie and cook our steaks while still reaching. Finishing up the steaks, potatoes, ears of corn and ginger shrimp rapidly we rounded Monhegan by 19:29, with the sun still up!

Now we are beating back to the finish and discussing where tactically we wanted to be on the course. There was a trough line predicted to cross our area about midnight taking the south to southwest winds thus far, and veering them to northwest, finally to the north and dying with light easterlies Sunday AM. However, the weather reports from stations in the path of the elusive trough were reporting similar conditions to ours. The south to southwest winds were holding thus far, so deciding whether to go out to sea and keep the south-southwest or heading in toward shore to pick up the northwest was a tricky call. We decided to keep close to the rhumb line since there was no current indication of the trough approaching, yet going out and trying to hold on to the SSW breeze would leave us out to sea when the trough finally did decide to cross.

Through-out the night we would tack on the headers and then be lifted on the new tack almost to the rhumb line. Once a southerly kicked up for a bit and we popped the kite, only to go back to SW and putting us back in the previous pattern. Around Seguin Island a false northerly came up, but didn’t hold.

It was hard to keep track of the competition during the short moon lit and slightly cloudy night. We rounded with Symmetry, saw the lead boats sailing off into the setting sun, but all else was hard to keep identifying. Around Seguin, the turning mark for other courses, we could see the cruising and doublehanded boats round and head back. Some finished the 49nm course in time for dinner and last call in Portland. Of course, the Open 60 Ocean Planet and 2 Open 50’s Artforms and Gryphon Solo came screaming by along with the leading multihulls.

Just a couple of hours from the finish line the trough came through first killing the wind in the battle-zone and then giving us our north northwesterly. Boom, up with the kite and trucking again.

Roach Coach crossed the line first, followed by Thumper and Snowbird. At 04:14, 19 min after Roach Coach we crossed, knowing our finish was in the top 3, cheering and screaming so loud, the finish line committee on shore heard it. We were taking the times of the boats finishing after us to see if we had enough time to keep our top finishing position and sweating it out since Milady a Sabre 34 was reported about to finish. We owed her a little over 50 min. Milady crossed allowing us to take the first by about 16min. The only remaining threat was Rita P a Pearson 30, in racing class for the first time. We ended up beating her by about half-an-hour on corrected time.

The early lead boat, Go-dog-go apparently went out, to hang-on to the SSW, and ended up in the doldrums for a couple of hours. The Olson’s finished within 11 minutes of each other with Snowbird & Symmetry in a pack near us.

On the way back to PYC we toasted off to our win and prepared for breakfast at the club.

Easy races are for pussy-cats.

That certainly was not Geoff. Although, it would be great if he could figure out how to use the computer. His postings on Sailing Anarchy would be legendary!Where the hell is G?
Only problem is there wouldn't be enough band-width to contain Geoff's ramblings....G has been "working" for a living at Handy Boat Circus....a lot different then sleeping behind the counter here

Rum made a fine breakfast beverage that morning... Hell, it made a decent beverage for the rest of the day too...

Working, working... I am not familiar with this word. What is its meaning? Does it have something to do with torture?

Hey Kitty,

Nice Fucking Trailer. Think you might need to buy a taller travelift to go with it... But then the trailer for that would be bigger, so you'd need a really big trailer for that... And then maybe a crane to put the travelift on the trailer... And an even bigger trailer for the crane... etc...

Seriously, I think you're coming out tomorrow.

Nice BDP logo on the door too. If you do crew shirts with that logo, I will trade you one of next years Three Legged Racing hats for it.
