Had/know any Express 37 rig or boat issues happen while crossing pacific?

Aloha. I am sailing from Maui to San Francisco in August on an Express 37'. Boat is in good condition. Would like to hear from anyone who has crossed an ocean in an Express 37' and experienced any rig/boat issues worthy enough to report/share? Any info is appreciated. Mahalo.-KT

The boat lives in Maui. We are sailing to California to do the Baja Haha. We will return to Maui in December. With previous owners the boat has done ocean racing. I am trying to be thorough and do my research to see if anyone knows of any known issues an express 37 may have when doing a crossing? Thanks!

I've done one and a half pacific cup races on an Express 37. The half was due to a rudder failure caused by a poor yard install, so not really applicable to the boat build.

I would say that one ought to be more concerned about the standard of the maintenance program. These boats are mostly over 35 years old and will have varying levels of wear and tear if not maintained properly. You say it's in good condition so...........

Spindrift V or Limitless would have no issues. But, they are both back home on the West Coast already.

Lessee, If it was my express, i'd check the rudder bearing, the chainplates, the standing rigging. If it was less than 10 years old would seriously think of replacing. have some lee cloths installed. How's the tiller?Do you have an e-rudder? Got a #4 jib and a double reef in a bulletproof main? How's the engine? Build some fuel boards and have lots of fuel ready. Just think it will be 10+ days closehauled or tight reach.

Perplexity (in the Seattle area) has done the trip home twice in the last two years (after single handed Transpac and again after Pac-Cup). That boat has new standing rigging (I think it was replaced in 2017). That boat has a good e-rudder system. Raz'r's list of things to check matches what I'd do if we took our Express 37 to Hawaii and back. Many (most?) Express 37s have had the rudder replaced too (the newer elliptical design is much deeper) -- if you have the original I'd want to make sure that it is sound.

I was just in Maui and saw an Express 37 in Lahiana harbor, I assume that is the one? I didn't get a close look, just noticed it when we went out on a tourist boat.

How big is your crew?

Interesting thread. Last summer Perplexity ran over a huge sperm whale 900 miles off the Washington coast. We did a nose dive, rolled over the whale, and saw half the rudder float away. The steering was jammed and I assumed that we were going in the raft. Surely there had to be serious damage.

But we weren't taking on water. I dove the boat the next morning and didn't see anything so we hooked up the e-rudder and used it and what was left of the original rudder to get home.

When I dropped the rudder on my mooring, the 3" stainless shaft was bent by about 15 degrees. I opened up the (1986) rudder and didn't see any indications of crevice corrosion or water intrusion.

We recently installed the new carbon rudder and confirmed that there was no damage to the bearing area. I was so impressed.

A well-maintained E-37 is a great boat for the ocean. As noted, you want a #4 and (in my opinion) a dodger for the return.

I really liked a high clew small headsail, #4 or Storm Jib, for my return trips. The high clew really opens up the visibility window. Not much to hit out there, but... It was also nice that it didn't catch any water while reaching.

I was asking how the boat got there because I know an E-37 that was setup for cruising that made the trip from SD to Hawaii around 2000. They had rudder bearing issues on the way over. I'm thinking the boat was named Marrakesh. Same boat?

Hi! I will ask the owner of any previous names of the boat and get back to you.

Hi,

Yes the boat is One Eyed Jack, it lives in Lahaina Harbor. Our crew will be 4. The boat is a newer and has an elliptical design rudder. Thanks!

also worth nothing, we are going to dry dock soon and getting spares and rig checked out. We are going to drop the rudder and check the bearings.
