Handheld Anemometer that’s cheap and reasonably accurate

I’ve been having trouble with my TackTick Wind instrument. I now suspect bearings so it’s coming down for inspection.

I’d like to test it while it’s off the mast.

I’m thinking a fan and a handheld anemometer.

Since it’s a one time deal, I’d like to find a handheld anemometer that’s not too expensive, yet reasonably accurate.

Any suggestions ?

This one is the type Race Committee typically use. $100.

I’ve just mentioned a bearing company in another thread on Tactic anemometer. I replaced the bearings a couple of years ago. Very easily done. Just need micro bearings in all Stainless steel. I think 3*8*3 mm.

on a day with zero wind or in the morning / evening lull

gusts of 100mph may cause a false reading
it was a partly "tounge in cheek" solution. but nice thing about the car you could vary your speed. and check it against different speeds. also have to hold it far enough out of the window to get away from any turbulence.

also keep in mind that a cars speedo could be off by as much of 10% so even if you get it to match. you still might be wrong...

It would be possible to compare to GPS speed though, right?

Nothing says 1958 like the Dwyer ball manometer

DWYER-WM-MPH-2.gif

Here is a good price on the Dwyer ball type:

$35

These guys are blowing out the Metric ones for $25 - if you don't mind making the Kans into Kanknots Konversion

Don't lose that ball, replacements are 3 for $25
