Hawaii public marinas are a dump

Since moving to Hawaii from Washington State two years ago I have had the experience of seeing the worst public marinas I have ever seen. You would think that Hawaii would have some of the best marinas in the nation since it is a destination port for many cruising and racing sailors. Yes, Hawaii has repaired and replaced some of their docks but there is still no transient moorage other than what you see in the picture. The dock where we were finally able to tie off our Express 27 is actually a condemned dock and you are not allowed to step on the concrete portion. They want you to "plank" to your boat only and not the dock (plank is not provided). This is ridiculous since you wouldn't have a 10 foot plank on your boat. I could go on and on about the stupid policies, sunken boats, shitty restrooms, poor customer service and lack of good moorage in Hawaii but I think we get the picture. When is Hawaii going to get their shit together????

I understand that if taxes are owed or other criminal forfeiture there is a reason for a local or state government to own a marina but why does your state own marinas?

What reasons are given to own the damn things? I would think the only things that a government would want to do is regulate, inspect and above all tax!

Just curious as this sort of thing is frowned upon in my little area on the east coast of the United States.

What socialist country is this occurring in again?

They are very poorly managed, and, unsightly, at best. As you might know, the best marina on the islands, and is on Oahu, is Ko Olina on the west side of the island. Private, and associated with the Ko Olina resort, it is well maintained to the highest standards, has nice amenities, and has deep water slips.

Those concrete docks were destroyed quite a while back - I think 2005. Some guys would make a passerelle from a ladder. Others would climb ashore from their bowsprit. Others would paddle their dinghy ashore across a gap of 10 ft or so.

At least they replaced the old F Dock which had no water and no electricity.

Welcome to the Democratic empire of Hawaii. State harbors division has been fucked up since before time. Many various explanations, but the evidence is clear. Why any group would allow a potential great source of income to fall so far into shambles is pathetic. Many private individuals & companies have made offers or even (DISNEY) offered straight money & been turned down flat with no explanation as to why. Get used to it.

Looks like a violation of the ADA.

Find a disabled person who wants to sail and go to court.

Shitty way to do it but OH well.

The Government of Hawaii is probably the worst in the Nation, next to Washington (femenista central) State.. If you have a 2% Pacific Islander genetic foot print, you get all kinds of $$$$$ from the Hawaii Govt courtesy of the rest of the Hawaiian/US taxpayers.

That is where your Hawaiian taxes go.

Reminds me of a university town where, as for the university itself, they held way back on building parking garages because the administration didn't like cars and as a result parking was terrible for students; and as for the town, because traffic was bad on the main strip, they seriously considered the solution of reducing it to one lane.

Hey, maybe the politicos don't want the boats (they're symbols of the 1 percenters, or something) and therefore don't want any sort of deal that would result in the marinas becoming good.

I always thought the government planned to sell the space to a hotel developer and grab the money. If that was going to happen they would have done it by now.

I would love to see the state government lease the marina to a private investor and get out of the marina business. The government of Hawaii will not give up the marinas because it is a cash cow for them which they take all the money from the tenants and put it into other places like roads, schools and social programs. They don't care about putting money into the marina because there is more boats in Hawaii than slips and people will pay because they have to put their boats somewhere. What they don't get is that if they build some great large slips for transient moorage, big yachts would come and pay lot's of money.

Hands down the single worst thing about boating in Hawaii. It's cronyism at it's worst. Slipholders consider themselves lucky to have even the shittiest of slips in the Ala Wai, or any other state marina. The waiting lists (unless you're part of the Aloha Shirt Maffia) were about 7 years for the Ala Wai back in '07 when I last lived there, and over 10 years for a slip in Hale'ewa.

I'm surprised to hear they haven't addressed the issue yet, I heard big changes were in the works. I guess I shouldn't be though. The f$%^ers are the least industrious people alive (the state marina workers), and the government is on par with some of the least efficient I've ever seen.

It really is a shame to see them squander such an amazing resource, and to in effect put a bottle neck on what would otherwise be a very robust sailing community.

Ko'olina is a great marina, but it's nowhere near where you want to be, and it is not cheap!

Ko Olina, unfortunately, exemplifies the tightass, white man's club, pay as you go world view. If you aren't a paying guest then you aren't welcome on the public beaches, public boat ramp (currently MIA), and certainly not in the private marina which charges for parking even to drive in and out of if you can get past security. Not much aloha. And it's boring out there.

In town it's a bit better, still some free parking (thanks to local resistance), good waves, good access, and way more aloha. But the previous administration(s) appeared intent on neglecting the marinas to the point where they fail and can be sold off to the highest (non-sailing) bidder, preferably a Japanese wedding chapel. either way, grim, difficult for sailors. And the private yacht clubs are extremely parochial to the extent of not allowing non-members (even from other on-island clubs) to race unless they are tricked into it. Only place I've ever sailed where members aggressively hassled guests. Mostly drinkers a few of whom have a sailing problem. Given that amazing how many good sailors have emerged over the years.

Fixed.

Sounds like a great place to not live.
