Something I've wondered about this "independent state legislature" theory. It isn't as absolute as some would say. The phrase is (emphasis mine) - "the Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators."
So, Congressional action would override it. Not that the next House would be interested. Unless there are a handful of level-headed Republicans, who still care about Democracy, to side with the Dems in crafting such a law.
